Customer Control Room Goes Down and Reveals Deficiencies

Customer Control Room Goes Down and Reveals Deficiencies

September 13, 2010 I get a phone message that the control room switcher will not function.  In a few hours I appear to check this report out.  The switcher will not work but I figure I must rule out the sync generator.  At first I can not see any sync signals due to my unfamiliarity to the waveform monitor.  I finally find what appears to be good sync going to the switcher.  We discover that the sync generator has a password and no one has the code.  I start to check out the switcher.  I noticed that two LED indicators are out on the main frame electronics.  The control head responds to reset and control head function checks but will not switch.  When the front panel to the main frame electronics is taken off, I notice that there are nine tiny LED indicators on the front left side of the main circuit board.  All LED’s are green except number three is orange.  Service documentation fails to tell me what the LED’s mean.  The documents only say that the blue LED’s must all be on.

September 14, Grass Valley requests that I obtain a boot up record of the switcher start up by connecting a computer to the switcher serial connector using Hyper Terminal and using 9600, N, 8, 1.  I get a good read out and capture it to my Mac laptop using Boot Camp and Windows 98.  I send the file to Grass Valley but they can not read it and advise that I zip the file.  I do so and they said that the read out appears to be from the control head.  I had no idea that the main electronics package has capability and different boot record.  I try to get a read out but NOTHING comes out of the computer port.  Grass Valley advises that it looks like the internal computer has possibly died.

E:Mail to customer: I checked the sync generator and it seems to be ok but Grass Valley and I think there might be a very slight possibility it might be at the root of the switcher failure.  I give that possibility about a ten percent chance.  When looking at the switcher, it shows failure.  There are five LED indicators on the front panel and they are ALL expected to be lit.  Two are NOT!  The one that really bothers our technical support guy and me is the one called “Ref”.  We both think that might refer to the black burst input signal not being liked by the switcher.  GV tech support does not seem to know what the LED lights indicate.  Black burst looks almost perfect to me when viewed on the waveform monitor, which is why I think the problem is switcher and not sync generator.  Next , inside the switcher unit there are nine very small LED indicators, that can only be seen with the cover off.  One shows orange and all the others show green.  Grass Valley technician compared their test unit with ours and a different single LED was orange.  This too points to the switcher having a problem.

A very wonderful Grass Valley technician, suspects the real problem is the switcher computer module inside the unit and thinks we should send the whole unit back for exchange.  The exchange price will be $9,769.00.  Once we tell them we will pay for the exchange, they will ship us an exchange unit immediately and we should get it the next day!  A second option:  Grass Valley will repair our switcher for $6,839.00 but that will take two weeks.  We MUST go with the first option, immediate exchange, in my opinion.

Grass Valley wants me to do one more trouble shooting procedure.  It is a bit weird.  I have to hook up a Windows computer with RS232 connection and use Hyper Terminal to read the switcher boot process.  They want me to send the text file that this process generates to see if he spots some item that he is missing and might redirect our efforts.  I will come in Wednesday to attempt to complete that procedure.  Once we get the exchange switcher in, I suspect it needs to be configured and not sure how much effort that will take.

September 15:  Trying to get authorization to get switcher repaired.  E-mails are traded back and forth to accomplish this.

September 16: Purchase procedure continuing.

September 17: Purchase procedure continuing with one problem after another cropping up:

  • Grass Valley can not call into the customer’s area code.  Grass Valley complains to its phone carrier and later this day the phone lines connect.  This delays the fax process between the customer and Grass Valley and technical support notifications to about five customer employees involved in the equipment purchase swap.
  • Grass Valley originally sent a price quote to me by e-mail.  Customer purchasing department asked for a letter head quote but this was delayed by phone problems.  It took close to half a day to convey the need and response to provide that document.

Once I had the swap out main electronic package I then placed it on top of the existing unit and one by one removed each video BNC cable from the broken unit into the new unit so as not to make any mistake.

I then switched out the switcher boxes by removing the broken unit and screwing in the new unit into the rack panel.

I could not find any memory stick configuration save for this unit so I had to use the system flow diagrams and figure out the cross point programming for each input.  This part of the installation created some white hairs on my head.  I later found out that the company that installed the system hired a Grass Valley engineer to do this part of the installation.  The payoff for learning how to do this part of the installation is I now have a good feel for making system changes when needed.

Once I had the switcher up and running, I definitely took the time to save the switcher configuration on to a USB finger drive.

The concierge for the Hilton San Diego Spa and Resort recommended the Bay Park Fish Company for an early dinner because we were in San Diego during Memorial Day weekend and restaurants and parking were getting slammed.  The concierge recommended this restaurant because it is visited more by local people and not by tourists.

My son does not like fish and my daughter is almost as limited in her choice of food.  Mom and dad love fish and, according to our children, other strange food items.  Mom and dad are often times challenged to find a restaurant that everyone in the family will accept.  The Bay Park Fish Company offers a wonderful broad choice of food choices for all ages of eaters.  As is often the problem with this type of restaurant, its breath of offerings tends to result in a lower score for most items.  I personally found my salmon fish plate to be nothing special.  The tartar sauce seemed to be mild.  My son ordered a cheeseburger but they forgot the cheese.  The waitress made the kitchen deliver the cheese to the table.  My wife ordered a calamari salad which she said was good.  She wanted a more spicy dressing.  My daughter had chicken tacos and they were good.  The waitress was fun and very good.

I do recommend this restaurant but I rate it as average.  If you find yourself in this city on a day where you think the restaurants will be slammed, I think you should consider this eatery.

If you dine here make sure you look overhead and see the numerous rod and reel combinations.

Date of visit: May 25, 2012  to May 29, 2012.

On Site Reservation: The reservation process and the person I talked to representing the resort performed a perfect process.  I was quite impressed.

Resort Check In:   Check in was fast and somewhat efficient in speed.   I did notice that the clerks may have failed to fully complete the check in process.  I suspect it might be the computer screens that they have to work with because I notice that their faces seem to struggle with what was displayed.  For example, we requested an upgrade if one was available but we did not know if we got the upgrade until we visited our room.

It would be more professional to have the hotel ask if small children are going to be using the room and if the answer is yes, put that family on the ground floor.  We were given a room on the ground floor of a two story building.  During our stay we had children run back and forth constantly overhead, most annoying.

Room:
Some hallways smelled musty.

Hardware items were loose such as inside bathroom handle, hot water knob, reading light base, fire alarm/sensor, etc.
Construction detail had minor deficiencies.  The front door needed to be pulled away from the jam before I could apply the lock to the door.  The door would latch but not the inside lock.  To unlock the door, I had to pull the door away from the jam to unlock the second lock bolt.

A very common problem of most commercial hotels, and motels is there is no means to open a window to get fresh air. This resort also fails this item.

The bathroom seemed to have no venting and the walls and mirror fogged up.  The bathroom was a decent size.  I loved the shower because the shower curtain was curved out from the tub to allow better movement.  The shower curtain was constructed to allowed one to see out into the room by looking over the opaque bottom two thirds of the curtain.  The shower head was perfect soft and large spray.  The hot water was available very quickly.

A very common problem with most large room hotels and resorts is the lack of enough AC outlets and properly placed.  In our family, three out of four family members typically use laptops.  We all like to run our laptops with house power.   We found that our room failed to offer enough wall outlets:

  • Power should be available to both sides of each bed.  I had to run my power cable for my laptop out of the closet used for the coffee pot and refrigerator.
  • Every room offers a very nice balcony or ground floor lanai but you will not find any AC power for your laptop.

The doorway to and from the outdoor lanai uses a sliding patio door.  The bottom floor threshold offers a rather high metal plate about two inches high that one might step on or trip on.  I tripped twice on it.

This sliding glass patio door offers a security latch that is attached with rivets which, in our room, were so loose that the door might easily be forced open.

In summary, it seemed that a possible pattern of deferred maintenance was in play because of the door and fire alarm problems listed above.

Acqua Restaurant
The menu selections are a bit strange in that there is a child’s menu and adult menu but not a teen or very young adult menu.  I have two young adult family members; one 19 and the other 23 years of age.  My son failed to see any menu item he liked on the adult menu and did not want to see the child’s menu.  What was missing was hamburgers, pizza and sandwiches.
I had to ask for bread to be provided to our table and once it arrived, it was very good.
The adult menu offered gourmet items and the kitchen provided excellent delivery of those dishes.  The portions seemed small but we were all very full at the end of the meal.
The service was good once the bread was sent to our table.

I signed up for a package deal where I paid ahead for 2 breakfast buffet meals, parking, and Internet while we stayed at the resort.  A fantastic waitress, named Maria, served our table two times out of our stay of 4 days.  When she looked at our voucher for two buffet meals she thought that was strange because there were 4 of us in the room.  She made a call to some mysterious person and zeroed out the bill for us both days.  For me, she was a reason to return to this resort again. I told her I would then on refer to her as awesome as per her request.

Internet Service:
The Internet service was pathetic if not downright awful.
The room has a DSL modem box with a single Ethernet cable ready to attach to a single computer.  I added a Macintosh wireless unit.  I was not impressed with the resulting service.
The internet service to our room appeared to exhibit up and down speed but overall quite a low speed, even stalling at times. My son told me he could not download UTube videos.  I tried to conduct an Internet speed test and the web site would not load.   Then later I got it to work.  Here the results of that test and I think these numbers were at the high point and NOT typical of the near standstill speeds we experienced most of the time.

  • Download speed: 1.22 mbps
  • Upload speed: .62 mbps

We were charged $14.95 for each day of Internet service but we never were offered any price reduction for the dreadful service when we checked out and paid our bill even though I complained about this item.

I tried Internet in the lobby area and I could not get my cell phone to work with Internet.  Because the dates of our stay was during Memorial Day, the cell phone (T-Mobile) really tanked in performance too.

NOTE: We were told that the Internet and TV signal service was undergoing improvement.   I was told that a new company took over providing both TV and Internet service.  However, we can not accept unverified claims so we can not tell you that this problem has been taken care of.

Fitness Center:
I was very satisfied with the work out facilities.  Treadmills and elliptical work out machines offer independent televisions on each of those machiines for your use.  I just love diversions from the pain.  The fitness room had a good selection of different types of work out machines, free weights, and other accessories.

Room and Support Service:

A very common problem with most every hotel, motel and resort is when a room accepts four people, the support items do not scale upward to support that many people.  This resort falls squarely in the middle of this category.

We needed a large bath towel for my son and called for one.  We were told it would arrive within 10 minutes.  It never arrived.

One of the vanity florescent lights went out on the left side of the bathroom mirror. I called and  a wonderful guy from engineering showed up and replaced the bulb within 15 minutes; very impressive.

The person(s) who clean our room seemed to be most efficient.

The television reception was pitiful.  The image broke up into pixels quite frequently.  Overall one could almost properly view the TV shows but the image break up was most annoying.  The audio was always good.  The performance of the large flat screen TV was very good.  The problem was the signal to the TV was dreadful.

Coffee Vendor:
It is a terrific added feature of this resort to offer a place to buy fresh coffee drinks and small breakfast items.  I rate this facility just OK.  The reason is that I had to throw away my zebra “mocha” because the barista put only coffee and no milk in the drink.  Our other drinks were properly made.

The smoky smell mystery:

Each evening we detected a slight smell of smoke in our room.  Sea World is very close and they do offer fireworks each night close to 10PM, which might explain the smoke smell.  But, we started to smell this faint smoke earlier.  We now think that because the bay is on the west side of this resort that individuals use the fire rings  at night and the smoke flows into  the complex and reaches some rooms.  The prevailing breeze is almost always west (ocean) to east (land).  We are not sure about this.

Overall Impression:
My impression was mixed.  I was disappointed when I first arrived because the place just looked aged and not kept up to my level of expectation.  The room seemed small.  Over time I acclimated to my surroundings somewhat.   Our room cost over $300 a night and for just the room, it was vastly over priced.  When you start to calculate the added offerings, the calculation changes.  But not much.  The wireless “service” added no value and was a very significant negative.  The fitness center, on site restaurant, and wonderful location raised its score but one might argue that the price did not match value.

This article is only directed toward individuals that own pretty good DVD players and flat screen displays using HDMI cables.

One of my jobs is to perform technical support for a state university department.  I was asked to solve a problem with a large screen TV set in a department’s class room used to show movies.  The complaint was that the TV screen looked pink.  My research came up with a couple of DVD test disks.  I was able to purchase the Disney WOW for blue ray players.  I also purchased the standard definition disk but have not had time to examine it.  Both disk types, high definition (blu-ray) and standard offer a pretty terrific package for improving the customer’s viewing experience.  In fact, hidden within those disks is the capability of performing professional video setups.  When using the disks, I recommend the advanced setup and not basic.  The basic did not go into setup detail which I felt was needed and you will learn very little.  The tutorials included with advanced were terrific.  I learned a lot.  The premium calibration tools are pretty impressive and you will better understand how to use them if you go through the advanced tutorials first.  I will next list what these disks have help me solve and the surprise for me was not that the TV set needed calibration but that the DV deck was set up incorrectly and really dragging down the flat screen TV viewing conditions.

  • Customer had the blu-ray DVD player set for incorrect output settings.  The black and white levels were wrong.  The color temperature was set incorrectly (Color temperature is a consumer choice. I tend to favor a blue shift because I like real “loud” whites).
  • The state university viewing room was simply awful for viewing when I performed my evaluation.  I could not read small text on the screen.  I immediately knew something was drastically wrong.  The TV was over scanning by five percent.  Flat screen displays typically should not be over-scanned.  We found that the DVD player was set for component output.  We had a 1080P system and the DVD deck was wired with HDMI cables to the flat screen TV set.  We then set the DVD deck HDMI output to 1080P and the focus snapped right in perfectly.  The black, white levels were off and we set them according to the screen charts.  The over scan we viewed in prior tests disappeared and came in perfectly.  Focus star charts looked terrific as well as small text and the tests for detail correction.  The customer chose a different color temperature which really made the whites look “loud” and perfect.  I typically let the customer choose what they want for color temperature.
  • A home PlayStation blu-ray player had an incorrect setting that kept us from adjusting white and black levels.  Once we made the PlayStation changes, turned off auto modes, the flat screen TV looked vastly improved.  The PlayStation menu now has a black background that the customer exclaimed they did not see before as it was washed out to a grey.

The next lesson learned was that we had to turn off some of the automatic features in the DVD player and TV video setup menu.  We discovered that we had to do this when trying to make adjustments to white and black levels.  They just would not adjust correctly so we had to go and find what auto function was turned on that kept us from making those changes.

TIP:  As I mentioned earlier, we found that the DVD decks had the wrong settings.  In each case, we found this out by not getting good results from the Disney WOW disks.  In other words, we could not get the TV set to make changes we wished and suspected the source.  Let me list those factors that led us to look at the DVD deck:

  • Flat screen TV failed the over-scan test.  It was over-scanned.
  • Flat screen TV had terrible image clarity for black text.
  • We could not get contrast or brightness to respond properly for those  test patterns.

I did find the Disney program wrapper a bit over done.  The Disney TV movie short clips included for viewing were pretty lame.  They seemed to be used to sell their DVD movies.  I wanted to see more humane beings to evaluate flesh tones but I found only one clip.  I wanted to have a few more clips showing dark area details like night action shots but I found none.  The separate Visions DVD, providing nature videos, was unnecessary in my opinion and a couple of the clips were utterly useless, told me nothing.

Recommendation:  This product, for me, is well worth the money and adds a very nice educational component.  I have to admit that this optimization system is professional if you take the time to learn to perform the adjustments properly.  You just might vastly improve your TV viewing experience.

Disney World Of Wonder HD Home Theatre Optimization DVD
Disney World Of Wonder HD Home Theater Optimization DVD

One warning should be included in this product evaluation.  The user must understand that the TV settings you will perform with this Disney system optimization are from a DVD player source (or computer).  We found that when we viewed our flat screen TV set from a cable box, even on “high definition channels”  the image quality really suffered.  I found TV flesh tones lacked real life detail and looked pasty on my office cable box.  Many cable TV boxes are unable to provide improved user settings to optimize your viewing.  You may be trapped within their inferior technology for cable show viewing.

Dear Baja Fresh,

One of your franchise restaurants just closed in Brea, California at 2445 East Imperial Highway, Suite H.  Our family has been going there for years.  It was a shock to find they had closed.  I asked a nearby restaurant owner what happened and I was told that the Baja Fresh restaurant owners could not pay their franchise fees.  I also discovered that this location required very high rent.  I realize that a well performing corporation needs to maximize profits.  I would like to make the point that these times are stressful for most of our society.   In a perfect world the people that rent the restaurant space might have lowered their cost a bit to help this family stay in business.  In a perfect world the franchise company might have lowered their cost a bit.  In a perfect world the company that rents the store space will not receive any rent.  In a near perfect world the franchise company will not get any franchise payment from one more restaurant owner and will see their area of coverage diminish.

Have a great day,

Scrivener is one of the best creative writing software programs.  Its power is most pronounced when the writer has problems bringing together lots of project components.  The cork board method really works for some people and I am one of those person’s.  With any powerful program, one occasionally comes across a problem that vexes.  The following e-mail exchange should cover one problem that was driving me nuts.  (March 18, 2012, Scrivener version 2.2)

———-

Scrivener customer support,

I think I set up Scrivener to insert color as a revision tool so I can view black as being my first writing effort and then red as my new changes.  I did this change some time ago and forgot how I accomplished this change.  For the life of me I can NOT get the red text to change back to black AS I WRITE.  I can change the color to black AFTER it is typed as red, which is most annoying.  I have tried preferences, menu bar text color change, perused forums, and conducted Google searches but nothing fixes the problem.  Any ideas?

Hi Score Card,

The way that revision colors work is that you enable a particular “Revision Mode,” and it stays in effect until you change to a new revision mode.

To turn off the revision color:

Format->Revision Mode->None

To remove the existing red text:

Format->Revision Mode->Remove All Revisions

Hope this helps!

Jeff responded to my e-mail the same day and within hours of sending.  I sent the e-mail on Sunday and was most surprised that I got a response so quickly.  I asked him how he was able to get back with me so quickly and on Sunday?

As for why I am working on Sunday, we are a small group but we are spread out all over the world and we are all on different schedules, so it is possible that you might get a response from one of us at any time of the day or night!
