Yesterday when we drove up to the Hyatt Hotel, the doorman told us of two of his favorite places to have breakfast.  The first place was called Kono’s in Pacific Beach part of San Diego.  It is located at the end of Garnet Blvd and the intersection of Ocean Blvd (no vehicles on Ocean boarwalk) as close to the beach as a business can get.

We got lucky and found parking on the short segment of Garnet between Ocean and Mission Blvd.  Because we parked across the street from this establishment we immediately noticed a long line trailing out of this place.  It was just past 9 am on a Tuesday.  Normally we do not like to wait to eat but decided to try this out as the long line and the recommendation sort of hooked us.  As we stood in line, we tried to figure out how the restaurant was able to seat all the people.  I went to a side door and saw there were a number of tables for inside dining as well as some eating spots along the walls.  I struck up a conversation with a woman behind me, once I got back in line, to discover that her daughter had been a waitress for a year at the restaurant and knew what was going on.  She told us there was an outdoor patio on the other side of the building, a short walk up past the building along the boardwalk.

(Tip) The third place one can eat is on a patio across Ocean (boardwalk).  Ocean serves as a sort of boardwalk but is not made of wood but a street for pedestrians, bicycles, skateboards and anything else that does not have motor drive.  Across the back porch is a very narrow walkway on one side of a vendor selling wind no needs.  You Just have to know where this path is.  The image below is marked for you.

Path to patio across the street from restaurant.

Behind that shop is a decent size patio with a terrific view of the ocean and beach.

This is the \" width=

It took at least 25 minutes to get to the counter to place our order.

This photo shows where you order your meal inside the restaurant.

From ordering window a view of the kitchen.

Two orders of pancakes, eggs (with cheese), pancakes and one breakfast burrito with drinks cost us about $22.   The meals are delivered to your table so pay attention to the name you give the cashier or your order will pass by you. The poor girls (did not see any men making deliveries) entered the small dining room first then the back patio and then had to walk across the board walk to the “hidden patio” to find who had ordered the meals they were carrying.  Our meal came within 5 minutes of paying for our food at the counter.  We sat inside because it was a wonderful day outside and the “hidden patio” was full and I did not care for the back patio.

Kono\'s Cafe dining room.

The food comes to you on paper plates and you are given plastic knife and fork.  The portions looked to be really large.  The pile of eggs was truly impressive and the plate had three strips of bacon and two pancakes.  The eggs were not salted and I liked that as some people are on low sodium diets and you are allowed to salt to your taste.   I sampled the eggs unsalted and the cheese did not overpower the eggs one bit and I had to salt lightly the dish and the flavor popped for me nicely.  The bacon was cooked perfectly and the taste was perfect.  The pancakes were pretty good, nothing above average.  The coffee tasted like Starbucks and needed cream for my liking.

In summary, I did like the experience; it was like taking a roller coaster ride once to see what it was like.  I think I would go back if I knew the place was not slammed and I wanted to have a good meal at a cheap cost.  I definitely would sit on the “hidden patio” if a table was available.

This resort is still being evaluated and this review will possibly change.

The grounds are luscious, jungle like, quite nice.

The front desk service was perfect.

The bell hop service was wonderful.  Benjamin lead us to our room.  He rode in a long golf cart that was able to carry quite a number of passengers.  He rode ahead leading our vehicle to our room.  He put our luggage into our room for us.  I would not let him leave until he gave us some tips on where to eat off site.  He was an instant , on the spot, concierge and what I liked was his explanations for his selections.  I will report later on how successful his selections turned out to be.

Parking was quite close to our room.  All the rooms here are on the ground floor.  I did not see any rooms above ground floor level which is reassuring in case of a fire.  If there was a fire I would not want to drive any fire truck down the resort roads as they are very narrow.

The room we were given was very nice and what I liked the most was it was spacious.  Two sitting areas were offered inside where the beds were.  A love seat with coffee chest and two chairs near the wet bar and a small table.  My wife and I could dance down the front area of the beds if we liked.  A lot of hotels put the wall at the foot of the bed just a few feet away.  At Paradise Point the wall was over 6 feet away.

Our room had a small refrigerator, small microwave, small safe, coffee pot (defective) with coffee but no tea.  We even had a wonderful sitting area outside our back sliding glass door.  We had contemplated doing an upgrade to a better location and larger room if an upgrade became available but once we viewed the room, it met all of our requirements, quite satisfactory.

No door separating the bathroom sink area had no privacy door which was unacceptable.

The coffee carafe did not have a lid so the coffee maker basket over the carafe would not release water into the carafe.  We used the microwave instead to brew our tea.  It took between 1 and 1/2 minutes to 2 minutes to brew a cup of tea.  At home I can brew a cup of tea in a large mug in 2 minutes to this tells me the microwave is a bit under powered.  You may ask, why would I want to know that?  How about cooking a bag of popcorn.

The sink for the wet bar was not installed correctly.  Actually the person who purchased the faucet failed to measure the faucet arch so water came down along the side of the sink rather than directly over the drain.  I had to be careful not to put water on the counter.

Wall outlets were plentiful except at the head of the bed.  My daugter and I like to use our laptops while sitting in bed.  We had to run our laptop power across the floor for the bed closest to the bathroom.

The bathroom offered unusual items like cotton balls and Q-Tips.  The hand soap was wonderful.  My daugther loved the shower.  When I took a shower I loved the overhead spray but  I noticed no soap bar.  We could only find a body wash.  I had to ask my daughter and wife what to do as real men do not use body wash.  Women use body wash.  There was one bar of soap in the sink area so I chose to use the body wash to try this girly girl method out but we were only given one wash cloth which my daughter already used.

To ensure modesty, I had to enter the commode shower room and close the pocket door to undress.  I took my pajamas into the room but there were no hooks so I had  to lay clothing on top of the commode.  Speaking of the commode, the toilet paper roll was mounted so far back it seemed a chiropractor looking for future business installed it.

My main complaint is the add on charges.  It costs extra to use the fitness center and to get Internet service.

My daughter was with my wife and I so we needed three towels.  My daughter called house service and within 10 minutes three bath towels were delivered to our room.  One of the towels was a bit moist which tells me that laundry is probably running just ahead of demand.  Let me tell you about the towels.  These towels will not be stolen.  My first impression that there was a mistake and the ‘towel” I had in my hand was a floor mat but when I compared to the other “towels” they were all the same.  What is really cool about those towels is they seem be capable to remove the epidermis and might diminish acne.

We noticed that when the people in the room on the other side of our head side of the bed ran the shower, the noise indicated that their shower was on the other side of the wall, quite loud.  Have you ever been in a hotel room and early in the morning a person or persons in an adjoining room get ready to leave and their preparations are easily heard in your room?  This was a definite minus point for me.  The builders should have put up double walls.  I noticed that the shower valve washer was loose and vibrated like a 50 pound humming bird which made for a really interesting duality of sound effect of water swoosh and hum, both quite loud and would be hard to sleep through.  I just hope the neighbors sleep in late every morning.

The air conditioner worked at a sound level that I think is normal.  Because I slept closes to it, and I wish it had been a bit quieter.   I must confess that when I have any difficulty going to sleep, even at home, I sometimes fantasize that I am some where else, in a cave, in a tree house, in a tent.  This air conditioner makes the perfect noise for being on a space ship, a low background propulsion sound.  I think I will travel by space ship tonight.

Is it too much to ask for a hotel, resort and motel to count the number of people who will occupy a room and supply the corresponding number of wash cloths, towels, glasses, mugs, etc.?  Paradise Point is just typical of the industry in this regard.  It seems that there is a industry method for daily activity for housekeeping which might not might not dovetail properly to the needs of the customer.   I just keep forgetting to make the request when we arrive at the front desk to supply the same number of towels, glasses, and wash clothes that there are in the room.

The scores this resort gets, which are quite high, must come from the jungle like ambiance, large rooms, the fact that one is at a resort with a lot of features, attractions and good staff.

My wife and I wanted to go on vacation this summer but gas costs being so high we decided not to fly or travel by car too far.  Our family decided to vacation in San Diego.   Trying to find the best accommodations was a chore probably because we tend to comparison shop and kept at it for three days.  Here are some tips for you to consider when looking for the best resort/hotel/motel.

1. When looking at brochures and web site images just beware of the following;

  • Most hotels and resorts put a LOT of money into the front lobby area to impart a good impression when you enter and for promotional materials.  Then when you get into your room, you find all the money is in the lobby and your room is cramped and short on amenities.
  • Images taken by cameras typically distort distance and rooms look larger in photographs than in real life.  When you see photos of rooms just keep in mind that the rooms will be a lot smaller than what you see.
  • Our family judges rooms not by the lobby images, not by room photographs but by actually staying in the room.  If you are like us, we take great stock in good honest reviews found on the Internet.  Beware that some establishments pay staff to put in glowing reviews into web sites and some web sites and magazines might receive considerations for presenting just the glow.

2. Make a list of places you think you want to stay on a pad of paper or computer and start taking notes on each place.  A number of book guides are available to help you find good places to stay.  Check the Internet sites for recommendations and read reviews.
3. Narrow your search.  We do not include places with bad reviews and low review scores.  You pay more for better locations such as view of the sea; mountains, lakes, etc so know what will make you happy when you arrive.
4. If you have a computer and know how to create and use a spreadsheet program like Excel or Numbers (Mac), you should consider putting information onto a sheet.  If you do not know how to do spreadsheets consider using a word document.  When I did my spreadsheet, it became quite large.  Doing the spreadsheet made me realize the importance of some data fields, knowing certain facts about the cost structure.  Here is my list of data fields:

  • Hotel Name The name of the bed & breakfast, hotel, resort or motel.
  • Square feet Not all hotels offer this figure unless you call.  Our family loves large rooms and this is a great way to figure out if your going to be cramped or not during your stay in the room.
  • Rating Expedia has a 5 point scale.  Priceline has 5 stars.  AAA has 5 stars being the highest ranking.  Most people want a high rating establishment but the more stars the higher cost to you.
  • Available? For the dates we want to stay, are the rooms available?  You might ask, why put any data into a spreadsheet if the rooms are not available.  The reason is you have gone to a lot of work up to now so why not enter the data.  A neat trick is to call about 10 or 11 am the next day or check the web site to see if there was a cancellation.  You just might get lucky.  I did this to get into the Grand Canyon when all the rooms were booked.
  • Source Where am I getting the cost data from?  This field is where  I will put in for example, AAA, Expedia, book, brochure, etc.
  • Total Nights How many nights show being available?  For San Diego, we found rooms were unavailable starting Thursday.  Rooms were available usually Sunday though Wednesday it seemed.
  • Cost per night. This is your cost per night, bare bones rate, with all other charges stripped off such as taxes, parking fees, package charges, etc.  For purposes of comparing costs with other facilities we core down to the basic fees and then compare each establishment at that level first before adding on what we think we need such as parking, Internet, “free” meals, etc.  We need to know the floor factor the room charges without any added fluff.
  • Number of nights. This is the number of nights that will be used to compute the total cost for your stay.
  • TMD Fee.  This is the San Diego Tourism Marketing Assessment fee which costs you 2.00% of the room fee.
  • Parking. We have seen parking fees as high as $22 per night.  If you stay a week, that is $154 out of your pocket if you arrive by vehicle and need to park it on premises.
  • Adjustment amount. I had to put this field in because some establishments would give you one night free if you stayed a set number of days or charge higher for a weekend stay, etc..
  • Adjustment reason. This field just reminded me of why I was paying more or less in the “Adjustment amount” field.
  • Offers. Just about every hotel offers package deals.  I only entered packages that were truly a discount to us.  This can be difficult to figure out.  Typically you pay for any package and this field could easily be done away with.
  • Sub Total I decided to come up with a sub total field to help me add the “Occ Tax” into the total cost.
  • Occ Tax This column calculates the bed tax as a percentage of the total rack rate.  For a week’s stay I found a rate as high as $414.04.  I definitely wanted to track this cost.  I found that the Occ tax was a constant, for the city of San Diego, so I put the city tax rate of “0.106” into a cell some place on my spreadsheet that was out of the way but I could easily find and refer to it.   That cell location would be entered into a column calculation.  The column calculation for “Occ Tax” is as follows:  Sum=(sub total * Occ tax).
  • Total. This would be the total cost to stay at that particular hotel.  Pay special attention to this field because this is what is going to be sucked out of your bank account.  If you did your spreadsheet correctly, this total should be pretty close to what you are going to be charged.  But, I can almost guarantee that you will not be able to discover all the fees so take this figure as being a close estimate.  Do compare this figure to any totals you receive from travel agents and web sites.   If your figure is unacceptable to you, too much in error, find out why.  If you are not that savvy with spreadsheets, the problem could easily be your formula for arriving at the total cost.

Here is my formula:

Sub total =sum(cost per night + TMD fee + parking) * Number of nights + adjustment fees.  (This implies that “adjustment fees are one time and not reoccurring).  I then put in one spreadsheet cell the “Occ Tax” which was a constant for that city of 0.106.  I then factored in the Occ Tax by then creating a total cell column and put this formula in place into the first cell and pasted the formula down the page into the same column.
Total=sum(sub total + Occ Tax column total).  I guess you could easily do away with the Occ Tax column totals and just perform this calculation:  Total=sum(sub total * Occ Tax cell constant).  As it turned out, my spread sheet was $7.44 (error) off for a week’s stay from our actual confirmation sent to us by the resort.
My final column calculated the “Cost per Night” which, for me was the crowning achievement.  We all want the lowest cost per night we can find and in this column the truth is revealed.  The formula is simple: Cost per Night =sum(Total / Number of Nights).

5. Check with a good reputable Internet travel web sites.    When doing so there are a number of web site items to be aware of:

  • Look at the prices you see per night.  Are they with or without local taxes included?  Local taxes and city charges can be quite high.  Bed taxes typically account for a percentage of the rack rate.  We found when comparing prices that some Internet sites only showed rack rate and not the full rate you would be paying each night.
  • Check for package deals that are only offered though Internet sales.  You just might get a good deal.  Some big web sites have large blocks of rooms exclusively to sell.  This is especially true for your large gambling cities like Los Vegas.   Our experience is package deals are not typically a savings but you will pay full price for what you might think is a discount.
  • You are usually going to save a significant amount of money if you can make your own reservations on line.  It is not unusual to shave off a 20% fee that a travel agent might charge.  If you need hand holding, just call the hotel and ask for reservations.  The people in reservations typically do a wonderful job of explaining the fee structure and where to find the best deals.
  • Check with the AAA guide if you have this service.  We went to our local AAA location and talked to a travel agent.  We got prices on a couple of places and a lot of good information.   At the bottom of the price quote sheet was the statement that we would pay a commission fee but I do not think it was factored into the price sheet we were given.
  • It is very important to next go to the web site for the hotel, resort or motel you are interested in.  We were quite surprised to find that Paradise Point Resort and Spa offered some lower prices than Expedia!  Again take a close look at the prices per night to see if they include or not the local taxes.
  • When booking on line, pay special attention to what you are doing and do not be afraid to use the “Back” option to review all your options over and over again.  At one web site there was a pull down menu for incentives.  We did not choose “All” but selected “AAA”.   We used the “Back” option on the web page and then selected “All” to discover that the AAA rate was significantly higher than a special summer rate the resort was running.

6. After you go to the general travel agent web sites and you narrow down your search for two or three hotels, I next suggest you go to the web sites for the hotels directly and see if they offer you a better deal.  We did find out that Paradise Point Resort and Spa offered a special deal we did not find on the Internet and we did choose that option with significant savings.
7. I will next recommend that you call the hotel or resort using their 800 numbers.  Ask for reservations (not the front desk).  Have a list of questions ready.  Here are some samples:

  • What is your best rate?  Where do we find it? When we called Paradise Point, we were told there were two good rates and the code words to look for on their web site.  At one resort we were told it was best to look at and pay the basic rates without any package deals being included and when we arrived just pay for what we needed at the time.  In other words the package rates did not offer any true discounts.  This is not to mean that other hotels and resorts will not offer true discounts.  Just make sure you know what you are buying.
  • Are your rates better from your web site or from some Internet site? This is a key finding.  You really want to know which is the best portal to enter to get the best price.
  • Where do you recommend we stay, what part of your resort or hotel? I asked this question when calling Paradise Point and I was told to ask for the Orchid area.  If you stay at the Hotel Del Coronado, we have been told to stay in a room with full view of the ocean and in the main old hotel.  We returned to a then favorite hotel in the Pacific Beach area of San Diego years ago and were put in a room over the laundry room.  It was awful.  The whole room shook. We immediately went to the front desk and asked for another room and were told there were none.  The hotel helped us find accommodations at a very nice hotel up the road.  We now know that the best rooms face the ocean and not to accept a room at the other end of the building.
  • How much for Internet service (if not free)?  Our family are all computer geeks and need Internet connectivity.
  • Other. Do you have any other concerns that you need answers too?  Example: I found the Lodge at Torrey Pines had a terrific rating (5 star AAA) but it did not show rooms for two adults and two children, only two adults.  I called reservations and discovered that they do not publicize the fact that they have a few rooms called Palisades that offer 2 queen beds.
  • Also, ask for the name of the person you talked to and if they have a direct number in case you need to call again.  I find some times this really helps in case you need to call again.

Print out your confirmation and take that document with you to the hotel as proof of the transaction.  In any case, make sure you record the confirmation number.  Funny thing is when I had to call back to reservations to add a day to our stay; they could not deal with the reservation number but asked for my name.

Finally, call the resort a few days before you leave and confirm your reservation.  Make a note of the person’s name you talked to, what date and time you called and take this information with you.

Zhenren and Selene Explained

Zhenren and Selene Explained

06/28/2008 Score Card Comments 0 Comment

This post is an attempt to explain the reasoning behind the conversations between Zhenren and Selene.  Zhenren represents an individual looking for enlightenment.   Selene represents Zhenren’s personal god.

Our family likes from time to time to go out to Sunday brunch.  One Sunday, we chose to go to El Torito Restaurant.  When we entered the restaurant close to our house, I noticed something different going on inside the restaurant.  Very close to where the omelets are prepared was a layout of clothing, looked like shirts in piles and some product information on the same table.  As we were seated in a separate room, I noticed that behind my wife was a family seated in a booth that seemed to know what was going on as people would come up and chat.  I decided to walk over and ask if my suspicions were true or not.  A women that looked like your typical soccer mom, the apparent mother to a number of children at the table, told me that indeed the restaurant had agreed to host the event.  It seems that their daughter had committed suicide a few years earlier.  As a tribute to their daughter, to keep her memory alive, they decided to form their own teen suicide prevention organization called Hope.  The mother told me how their daughter’s suicide had totally shocked them and led to their realizing that this is a more common problem than most people realize.  Their efforts were to make families with children aware of this in an effort to save lives.  I agreed to put their web site as a link to this one.  When I got home I did some research and found out that indeed this is a serious problem.  I just could not get it out of my mind as to why some young person would end their life.

The conversations between Zhenren and Selene is my extremely  small attempt to contribute to aiding in preventing teen suicide.

I some times kid around by saying that I sort of have given up on helping adults because they had their chance at life, old enough to have enjoyed all this for a while, made their choices, and now must live the choices they made out as results or outcomes.  Poor choices naturally and typically result in poor outcomes.  Adults become set in their ways and typically chose not to be open minded to new ideas and new information which stops mid course adjustments and even realization that former assumptions about life were wrong.  So, the dialogues between Zhenren and Selene are my attempt to provide a new philosophy for young people.  It just might be too late for adults to come to enlightenment if they have not yet attained it.  The conversations try to bring truth rather than authority for your consideration.  All the posts here try to reveal, examine and share truth elements.

Zhenren represents a person looking for answers, looking for enlightenment which might also be a teenager somewhere.  Selene is that person’s personal god.  What is ironic is that Selene does not exist.   Selene tells Zhenren what I want her to say.  That does not make me god, I just take what I have learned and put them out for Zhenren and others to accept or deny.

This embedded philosophy is an attempt to base this belief upon truth and not existing authority or any type of authority.  This philosophy tries hard to start with a clean slate of logic, if that is possible, look for the truth elements and come up with answers that work for now and into the future.

What is most disappointing to me is to study other religions and find that they are based upon a foundation that just does not hold up to the truth.  There is no reason for a philosophy to be complex beyond anyone’s everyday complete comprehension and many religions seem overly complex probably because they are founded upon evolution of thought and principles by many people who did not share the same ideals but had a hand in the outcome.  There is no reason for a belief system to require a priest to read a thick book that is difficult to comprehend by the masses and open to interpretation and manipulation by the priest.  There is no reason that a belief system needs to be based upon paying others money to subscribe.  There is no reason why a belief system requires attendance at certain functions.  There is no reason why a belief system requires a person to show homage to any person living or dead, icon, or imaginary figure.  A religion’s sole reason for existing is to give comfort to the individual, not a tool for manipulation.  I encourage you to find your own enlightenment based upon science and not suspicions or authority.

We live in a Meridith built home. My wife tells me that Meridith is a very good home builder. In my opinion, it IS in some regards but NOT in others. I believe many home builders intentionally cut costs in a number of ways especially items that will take you some time to figure out. Our very large house has one door bell and it is located in the family room, north east corner, ground floor. The door bell can NOT be heard upstairs where the bedrooms are. The assumption, I guess is that all occupants hang out in the family room, dusk to dawn. As a result, of this knuckle dragging design, we miss package deliveries. The wiring for the existing door bell runs in an air space between floors. To tap into that wiring so we can install an upstairs door bell sounder, probably means opening a ceiling and finding a way to feed wiring up to the top floor from the bottom floor.

New expensive homes have hub rooms and I would hope that door bell wiring is broken out in that room.

If a shipper were to knock on the front door loudly, any person in the master bedroom would probably hear and come rushing to the front door but the other three bedrooms might not.

With energy costs sky high the gas costs for shippers is eating into profits. I just wonder how many times a delivery is made to a private residence, the person is home but the door bell and knock on the door is not heard. If one stops to realize, some if not most home builders might have set the shippers up to loose a lot of money. The shippers should do a study to find out how much profits they loose with this type of building deficiency, how many shipments should have been made if the house occupants could hear the door sounder. Individuals work in back yards, people watch TV with the sound up loud, portable audio listening devices are used and can result in diminishing door bell sounding devices.

One option, for the customer to use if a delivery is missed, is is to travel to the shipping store/depot and after a set hour, typically 6PM, you can pick up your package. The trouble here is the customer is inconvenienced and charged by paying money for gas to get to and from the shipping point. I recently filled out a customer survey from a well known manufacturer who has Internet sales and store sales. One of the last questions on the survey was this: would I purchase again on line. My answer was no. I was asked if I would recommend to others to buy on line. My answer was no. I have found out that, from my experience, the vendors can not seem to consitantly ship expidited orders. I never get merchandise when I need it. This is NOT the fault of the shippers but the Internet sales businesses. This problem trickles down for the shippers and the customers. The shippers are loosing money by not being able to make fast and accurate home deliveries. This is because the vendors some times screw up the ordering process making the customer base angry at the shippers and not willing to use Internet purchases again. Next, the homes with inadequate front door signaling means that the shipment might not be completed on time and might make the customer spend time and money to retrieve a package making even more customer less likely to use Internet sales. The shippers are being set up to fail and they do not currently have any way to fix this problem.

Solutions:

#1. I recommend that the shippers bring a class action lawsuit against any home builder who has in the past and is currently not offering a meaningful method for providing a signal system that someone is waiting at the front door. As part of that class action I would require the home builders to come up with a solution and pay for total cost for each and every home that needs this added.

#2. I think the shippers need to come up with a creative solution by developing an automated system where the customer is notified just prior to the delivery, requiring a signature, being made. With GPS technology the shipping truck location is known. The shipping routes are typically generated by computer to save fuel for the shipping company. It is not much of a stretch to offer a service where the customer can be notified to home phone or cell phone that the delivery is pending in a short time and that lead time prior to delivery to be specified by the customer. Furthermore, it should not be a stretch to go on line with a computer and view the truck route and see the best guess estimated time that the driver will arrive at your door.

I placed an order for Apple laptop, iTouch for my daughter and Apple protection for the laptop.

I added 3 day shipping so I could get my laptop in the hope it might arrive before the weekend.  Here is what went right and wrong with Apple’s shipping.

June 17, Tuesday, order was placed late in the evening so statistical purposes the order should start on the 18th.
June 18, Wednesday, The clock starts.  Credit card company called to authorize large charge against credit card by leaving a message on our answering machine.  We did not spot the message until later that day, which delayed the transaction from proceeding.
June 19, Thursday, iTouch  shipped from China.
June 20, Friday,  iTouch arrived in California (before 10AM) – simply incredible speed by FedEx!  This item was shipped 3 day, which was not my intent.  I really wanted the laptop to arrive in 3 days.

Note:  Later I contacted Apple and their representative took a screen shot of the iTouch  FedEx tracking screen.  The iTouch reaching me in one day from China.  The Apple representative had never seen that before.  We were both impressed.  I fantasized that FedEx had developed a cannon and shot the order over the Pacific Ocean.

Next we are to see that Apple screws up the 3 day shipping completely for the laptop.  I can only figure that they took it upon themselves to ship the iTouch as a 3 day and NOT the laptop.  The Apple representative told me that ALL items should have been shipped 3 days.    From my point of view, if I were to choose which item to ship within 3 days, the laptop  should be the 3 day shipping item and NOT the iTouch.  When you are paying $15 for 3 day shipping does it make sense to apply that to a much lower cost item?  I think not, unless you specify otherwise.  Apple representative said all items were paid for to be received in 3 days.

June 20, Friday it would appear that Apple has finally put my laptop together and it is ready to ship, two days later from when the order went in.
8:28 AM Package data transmitted to FedEx
3:12 PM Picked up. Package received after FedEx cutoff.
3:35 PM Left FedEx origin facility

10:00 PM, In transit; “Location Shanghai CN”.  Called Apple to find out why laptop showed still being in Shanghai.  I was told that once a day FedEx will scan any item still at their facility.  Apple drops 3 day shipping charges for this mistake.
June 21, Saturday,
3:46 PM Int’l shipment release, location Anchorage Alaska!  Looks like Apple never intended shipping the laptop within 3 days.
June 21, Saturday,
7:49 PM, Departed FedEx location, Anchorage Alaska.

I am still waiting to receive laptop.  This story will be updated as I find out more.

Here is what I think might have happened but I can not prove it.  I paid for 3 day shipping.  They provided 1 day on an item that comprises way lower weight and size.  Apple might hope that the larger item, the laptop, because it has to be built to specifications, allows them the argument that it will arrive later.  If the customer does not track the shipping, but only relies on the Apple notifications, they might not be any wiser.

Customer support is just wonderful.  The Apple product is wonderful.  Too bad that the Apple octopus has some arms that are working at hay seed level.

Our recommendations:
Buy your items from the Apple store.  I was told that the 4 gig memory would be put into a new machine in one day.  That was the only item that the Apple store needed to change for my purchase.  I feel so stupid ordering on line.

From our experience from Apple and other companies, 3 day shipping is a dice roll.  Each time we encountered a problem the fault lay with the vendor, not the shipper.

Our experience is that enhanced shipping methods do not work.  The fault lies with the vendors and not the shippers.

Watch out when you order any item using the Internet and you specify any enhanced shipping modes.  Take screen shots of what you pick at each stage of the ordering process so you can review and prove what you purchased.  Shipping charges typically come toward the end of the on line buying process and thus it is very hard for you to go back later to figure out what the process was that you and the vendor agreed to.

Good luck ordering on line with some vendors.
