Walt Disney World, Orlando Impressions

Walt Disney World, Orlando Impressions

Our family has stayed in two of Walt Disney World Resort locations, Old Key West and the Treehouse Villas within the Saratoga Springs Resort with a number of years in between.  Our accommodations were pretty top drawer so I can only present my viewpoint from those experiences.  I am not being paid or have I received any form of payment or considerations for presenting these views.  What follows is my honest  impressions.

It seems to me that someone with a viewpoint of the customer seems to be in charge and not in some token amount but to a significant degree in designing this resort and making it work as well as it does.  They must have shot or put in the broom closet and locked the door every and all bean counters at Disney World.  In most all other outside  hotels the emphasis is on calculating what impresses the customer and when to impress the customer followed by what can be taken away from the customer so they will not complain or maybe not notice.  All of this to keep costs down for the company.  For example, most all hotels have a large fancy entrance and lobby but when you get to your room the concept is downsize the hallways, your room, your bathroom, and any balcony.  Not at Disney Resorts.  The expense and expanse theme flows where ever you go, approaches, entrances, businesses, eating establishments, restrooms, places to stay, trash can placement, and even very small amenities.  There are so many examples of trying to be bigger, better and more accommodating in this resort. They offer very nice presentation, activities, and living spaces at Disney World, Orlando.

A second but related factor is day to day operation costs.  Most if not all businesses will attempt to find ways to cut back expenses.   I have found that this resort does this also but in ways that are often hidden.  The trash bags in our resort room trash containers are a sleeve of bags at the bottom, under the current used bag.  In this way they can pull the full bag away from the next bag, throw the full one away, and fill out the new empty one to the sides of the can so it is most quickly ready to be used.  We found these bags to be the thinnest I have ever seen and easily torn.

The third factor is they are smart about their choices on most everything they buy and do for medium and long term cost savings.  They do cut back expenses where they can but they seem seem to do so in areas that are far away from the customer being concerned when compared to most other places.  They also seem to save money by doing things in creative ways.  For example, I noticed that they have a special roadway blower that shoots a concentrated blast of air downward so leaves in the forested area of Saratoga Springs Treehouse Resort are cleared quickly.  A second person gets out of the cart towing this blower to do the detail work.

Leaf blower clears roadways and pathways at Saratoga Springs, Treehouse Resorts

The forth appreciation factor is the design and construction.  I do not always agree with the apparent merging together look of different building designs in one place and spacious continuity that most easily flows in other locations.  But, it is my impression that everywhere, Disney World Orlando is never dull to view its sights.

The fifth factor is safety.  This resort is clever and serious in its efforts to maintain a safe environment for the customer.  For example, each bus driver must do a safety inspection for the bus and the items are listed on a form.  Some items are significant enough that the bus will immediately go out of service.  I noticed that the lug nuts on the bus wheels had a white sort of caterpillar attached from the wheel lug nut bolt to the lug nut.  It is an adhesive that tells the people that inspect the bus that the lug nuts are ok or backing off.

Image shows bus lug nuts with white markers that must line up to show nuts have not backed off from being tight.
Walt Disney World, Orlando, bus lug nuts showing they are tight.

The method for accomplishing this apparent and perceived high caliber of operation is by passing their expenses on to you the customer.  When you come on to their property you will pay dearly for everything.  I have dined at some of the most expensive restaurants in this facility, costing hundreds of dollars and I keep thinking that I have better meals for a fraction of the cost in my home town.

Walt Disney World Resort at Orlando is not perfect.  Each time I spot a small problem here and there.  For example, the store at Old Key West is much better than at Saratoga Springs.  My bed at the Treehouse creaked and the master bedroom bathroom had automatic sensors that would turn vent fans on when you entered the room which we had to turn off each time, most annoying.  I offer those as just a few examples.  My point is that I tend to weigh the “wow that is cool” against the “darn it” experiences and this resort is a winner.

Ham Radio Activity At Walt Disney World, Orlando

Ham Radio Activity At Walt Disney World, Orlando

I really recommend that if you are a ham radio operator staying at Walt Disney World, Orlando, that you check out Disney Emergency Amateur Radio Service or D.E.A.R.S.  Here is the web site for that club: http://www.wd4wdw.org/.    The web site shows the following information:

147.300 +.600 PL tone 103.5? and ?D-Star

442.000 +5.000

WD4WDW B

Gateway Enabled

After I arrived at the Saratoga Springs Resort, I broke out my ARRL Repeater Directory for 2011-2012 and input all the frequencies for Orlando.  D.E.A.R.S was the only one with any significant activity and the only repeater that I was able to make a contact on.  I took along my Wouxun KG-UV3D because if ham radio was bust, I could use the FM radio and listen to NPR.  Also, if I lost my HT, the financial cost would be way less than my Kenwood unit.  Programming the Wouxun for repeaters is a pain.  It is best done using a computer and the USB cable purchased for that radio.  I had my Apple laptop and using Bootcamp, I restarted into the Windows operating system so I could load all the frequencies into the radio.  The Repeater Directory lists both input and output PL tones, all being 103.5.  But, when I specified input and output PL, I got nothing.   The Wouxun allows you to turn on the green channel activity light for any channel you want. I turned that on for all the channels to further my troubleshooting.  I then turned off the PL tone for output and I was able to listen to voices. I did make a contact with KG4URL, a brief chat.  That operator, Jim, was a bit confused when he heard my HT tone when I turned my HT on and off.  At his end he heard two tones, one from the repeater and one from my radio.  I told him that I had BEEP turned on.  Jim said that most all the repeaters in the area have repeater beep.  It has been my experience that many Southern California repeaters do not have beep tones.  I thus recommend that you turn that (Wouxun KG-UV3D menu item 11) off if it is a feature offered on your HT.

The next issue that I picked up was a comment made on the D.E.A.R.S. repeater.  An operator said that when he got near a Disney or Links bus his HT would misbehave.  He figured that those two buses transmit signals and interfered with his HT.   If you have never been to Disney World in Orlando you should be impressed if not amazed by the bus service here.  It is all free.  They have a LOT of buses.  The buses run on routes about every 20 minutes or less.  I have been told that there are 1,500 drivers.   This is the best bus service I have ever seen.  I have been told that each bus is outfitted with GPS and the drivers do not have to activate any of the voice announcements because it is done for them by the on board electronics.  Sorry, I degrees.  My point is this.  If the Disney buses do create  electronic hash and it affects your HT, your going to be affected on EVERY road way in this resort because there are buses running all the time.  You should be fine away from the buses.

Restaurant Name: Le Cellier
Location: Walt Disney World, Epcot, Orlando, Florida
Web site: http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/dining/le-cellier-steakhouse/
This is an extremely popular restaurant.  Prior reservations are required about 180 days before you want to dine but check with the restaurant as to their current policy as it may change.  There is also a cancellation fee charged to your credit card.
We attended January 11, 2012.

  • Ambiance is nice, nothing special.  If you are looking for a romantic evening with your date, this is not the place.
  • The seating is a bit cramped everywhere we looked.  This is where individuals come to eat excellent food and do not mind the close spaced tables.
  • The service is very good. The serving staff typically are exchange students that come for one year, only, to Disney World for work.  Our server was intelligent, articulate and accurate and had a most pleasant personality.
  • Bread supplied to the table was very good and plentiful.  My son does not like cold butter served with his bread and the butter that came with the bread was soft and mixed with maple syrup.
  • Speed for food arrival, as you would expect, is not quick.
  • The Canadian cheddar cheese soup was excellent.  We recommend it highly.  They even used Moosehead Beer in making the soup.  Cost was $9.00
  • The Canadian “Prime” New York Strip was a 12-oz cut with Gruyere-Yukon gold potato Gratin, wilted spinach and vin rouge reduction for $42.  It had an incredible taste, tender and perfectly cooked.  We recommend this dish.  The steak was huge, the wilted spinach was applied like a garnish and the potatoes were a reasonable size.  The potatoes were rather good flavor and the spinach was a bit better.
  • For desert, we chose the maple creme brûlée for $8 and the apple tart.  The creme brûlée was very good.  It had a perfect crusty top, soft center, rich flavor, and a hint of maple.  The apple tart was the recommendation of our server, Colin, and was nice.
  • Our bill for four people came to over three hundred dollars.(with tip).  This is a signature dining restaurant which translates into paying lots of money for excellent food.

We recommend this restaurant for food and service but it may be a wallet buster.

Looking For The Black Cat (Christmas 2011)

Looking For The Black Cat (Christmas 2011)

A very impressive Walt Disney World, Orlando Christmas celebration activity is viewing a most impressive light and sound presentation in Hollywood Studios area called the Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights. The story is that the Osborne family decorated their home with lights, the display growing each year. Finally the display got so big, and the traffic driving by got so bad and the neighbors complained so much that Jennings Osborne, the patriarch of the family, donated the whole display to Walt Disney World.

At Disney World the display is shown on the Avenue of the Americas, a movie set of streets from New York, San Francisco and the imagination. The entire surface of each building is covered with lights, and the Osborne family pieces are added. But the lights don’t just look nice. They are coordinated with music, mostly some Christmas carols, but most dramatically with some pieces by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The lights go on and off and form patterns in time to the music. And there is fake snow blowing down at times.

A little known aspect of this show is trying to find the black cat.  (The black cat when viewed is actually purple).  It seems that when the lights were shipped to the park, a Halloween decoration, a black cat, was included by error.  The Disney people, sometimes known for adding hidden objects (like Mickey), decided to have some fun and include the black cat to the light presentation.  Finding the black cat each year has become an interesting aspect of this light show.

I received an e-mail January 2, 2012 from American Airlines <[email protected]>.

Here is the text of that message:

American Airlines.

The e-mail had a “Ticket.zip” attachment.  I tried to open it up on a Mac computer but it would not show.

The e-mail was sent to a web site address that I have for a city organization that I administer a web site for.  It appeared to me that someone in my small group had organized a trip to Fremont, California for some training.  It took hours to track this down but I slowly realized that this whole thing was an alleged spam.

I called American Airlines, which by the way has an alleged dreadful reputation, and after about eighteen minutes of waiting was told that this is a spam e-mail and customer service has been getting a LOT of calls concerning this event.  I was told that legitimate e-mails from American Airlines includes a logo and ticket numbers.  My e-mail had neither.

The American Airlines customer service person told me to NOT open up the attachment and to delete the e-mail.

Updating the Barnes & Noble Nook Color to Version 1.4.1

Updating the Barnes & Noble Nook Color to Version 1.4.1

I found that my recent purchased Barnes and Noble color Nook had an update.  I had the option to wait for it to roll out or manually install it.  I tried the do it yourself method.  I went to this web site  http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Software-Updates-NOOK-Color/379003190/ to get the instructions.  I followed the instructions but the device would not install.  What I got to work is I went in to look at the contents of my Nook hard drive and found the .zip file.  I clicked on it once and it said that the file was not recognized.  I finger tapped the file ikon a second time and it began to load.  I am not certain this method was designed by the software engineers.  I would NOT attempt this procedure until their method fails  to work for you.  Do try the Barnes & Noble steps first and see if they work for you.  All I can tell you is it worked for me after waiting over half an hour for the Nook to do it by itself but utterly failed.

(Following black text, seen below, came directly from the Barnes and Noble web site.  I added red text notes.)

Get Version 1.4.1 Today

To get the update manually, you can download the software update to your computer at any time and then copy it onto your NOOK Color. Simply follow the steps below. Manual Download Instructions:
1. From your computer, click here for the software update file. Select Save and select Desktop as the location. Do NOT modify or change the downloaded file’s name in any way. Do NOT open the *.ZIP file.
2. Press the Home Button and then tap Settings on the Quick Nav Bar. Then tap Device Info and make sure your NOOK’s battery charge is at 20% or more.
3. Connect your NOOK Color to your computer using the USB cable that came with your device. A new, removable drive should show up in My Computer (Mac users will see the NOOK drive appear on the desktop or in devices). You should also see a “USB Mode” message on your NOOK screen.
4. From your computer, drag and drop the downloaded *.ZIP file onto the main directory of the NOOK drive. Do NOT open or unzip the file. You should not create a new folder on the NOOK drive or add the file to any other existing folder.  When they mean the main directory, they mean outside of ALL the folders. Do NOT put it into the B&N Downloads, as some might think proper.
5. Eject or Safely Remove the NOOK drive after the file transfer is complete.
6. Your NOOK will automatically recognize the file after a few minutes when it goes to sleep mode, and proceed to install the updates.   This did NOT work for me.  I instead, went to the small ikon bottom left corner representing the micro SD card and press my finger on it.  This opens up the SD card or the Nook hard drive.  I chose to view the Nook hard drive and found the zip file there.  I finger tapped that file a couple of times until the file loaded and then lowered the Nook down to my desk and did NOT disturbe it while it installed the new system.  During the installation the Nook screen will show you that the installation is taking place.
7. Please do not turn off your NOOK during the installation process.

8. Once the installation is completed, your NOOK will automatically restart and go to the unlock screen.

9. On the bottom left status bar a green “n” will appear. Tap on it for additional information; the software has been successfully updated.  Yes, this did appear but when you finger press this little ikon, it puts up a small screen telling you have completed the update and then the little “n” will disappear.

NOOK Color must remain turned on while the update is being installed. Once the software is installed, your NOOK will automatically restart. To verify you have the latest update, tap Settings from the Quick Nav Bar, tap Device Info, then tap About Your NOOK, and check to see that your software version number matches the number at the top of this page.

NOTE:  That zip file will seem to disappear off the Nook hard drive after the installation is complete.  I think I did find it moved to “My Downloads” as a “6_Ticket.zip”.  I pressed my finger down on the file and I was given only one choice of “Delete”.  I chose to delete the file.
