Daughter’s Top 3 Amsterdam Picks

Daughter’s Top 3 Amsterdam Picks

11/29/2013 Score Card

After more than two hours of research (Nov. 29, 2013) looking at about 15 hotels, my daughter came up with her top 3 choices.  We removed much of her research comments such as prices, reviews and any other information that is time dependent.  The comments below do not show our hidden requirements of location near the Dam and the central location close to sight seeing locations.

Radisson Blu Hotel, Amsterdam:  Free Wifi; 6 min. walking distance from Dam Square; 17 min. walk from Anne Frank House.

Hotel Estherea  (on canal) Has internet (wired) in room, when booking, we can get a discount on breakfast.  Cancelations are free of charge up to 24 hours before arrival.  “Special gifts” available if staying more than 3 nights. 4 night gift is a custom canal cruise.  6 min. from Dam Square; 10 min. from Anne Frank House

Inntel Hotel Amsterdam Centre
No Free Wireless internet in room.  ?6 min. walking distance from Dam Square; 13 min. walk from Anne Frank House

November 29, 2013 we booked a stay at Hotel Estherea.

My Daughter’s Spread Sheet Research For Amsterdam

My Daughter’s Spread Sheet Research For Amsterdam

11/29/2013 Score Card

The spread sheet below was done by my daughter, November 29, 2013.  The data in the table may very well become less accurate as time moves on.  We offer this data only as an example of one method for deciding upon a place to stay in a foreign country.  Not stated in the data sheet is the fact that we did some reading about Amsterdam and found that there are certain city sections that we wish to be close to.  I strongly recommend that you do the same.  First, look to see the sights that interest you and you just might decide to stay at a hotel that is within walking distance.

The Amsterdam Hotel spread sheet below is an example of how complicated finding just the right hotel in Amsterdam can be.  The fields shown along the top will probably not be as important to you.  For example, we have one party member that has a walking problem so we need a hotel elevator.  We also want to know how close the hotel is to the attractions we wish to visit so we added distances.  I have removed the hotel cost from this sheet as they would be out of date by the time you read this post.  The ratings are from the Internet web sites and is subjective.  I really recommend that you read the reviews that are posted and you can detect that there are some pretty tough individuals that are hard to please.

Need Advice For Visiting First Part Of Tip: Amsterdam?

Need Advice For Visiting First Part Of Tip: Amsterdam?

11/29/2013 Score Card

A group of 8 adults will be visiting Amsterdam, May 2014.  We need hotel, restaurant, and points of interest ideas in Amsterdam.  We would love to stay 4 days in a hotel by a canal.  We need 4 rooms.  If you have a recommendation to make, please share with us.  Send an e-mail to [email protected]

We plan on sharing our reviews of everything about the trip including travel, hotel, restaurant, and places we visit and make reviews in this web site.

Following is what we have discovered so far during the planning for this trip (End of November 2013):

  • Flights into Amsterdam typically arrive early in the morning.  Hotel rooms do not offer up their rooms until about 3pm.  Hotels charge about $40 to $50 for early book in.  Our AAA travel agent said that this is a money maker for the hotels.  My daughter came up with this solution.  Because we need 4 rooms, only pay for one room early book in and everyone store luggage and freshen up during the early hours using this single room.
  • Tip from my son: Use Firefox browser and go to File > New Private Window.  This method should keep the web site booking companies form seeing your interest in any particular hotel and raising the rates if you visit a page frequently.
  • Our top recommended trip web sites for Amsterdam:
    • Booking.com.   I just love the Amsterdam map with all the hotel pins.  I can zoom in and out.  When I pass my computer mouse over any map pin, I get a quick look at price.   We want to stay in the “Canal Belt”, 16 and 17th century waterways and Booking.com worked for me:
      • Singel
      • Herengracht
      • Keizersgracht
      • Prinsengracht
    • Kayak.com does a good job of presenting all your choices.
  • After using a good web site search and finding your top three or more hotel picks, then go to the hotel web sites directly and see if you can get any better deals.  In the United States, this almost always works but we have never been to Europe before.  Here are the  reasons why we like to compare web vacation web sites and hotel web sites.  The booking web site has to make a profit.  Some times the rooms are located in less desirable locations.  Some times the hotel can offer better prices, secret offers or perks.  My daughter discovered that some hotels give better rates for AAA, senior citizens and advanced purchase by visiting the hotel web sites directly.  When you go to any hotel web site examine it carefully as some money saving promotions are another page or two away from the home page.
  • We have been very impressed with AAA travel agents.  We have booked our flights and tour in November 2013.
  • Look into getting a credit card with an imbedded chip and rewards.  AAA is not offering a Visa card with some pretty nifty rewards.  Europe is not credit card magnetic strip friendly.  We applied and got accepted for AAA Member Reward Visa cards.  The rub is that you must ask for the chip.  We had to ask Bank of America for the chip after we received the cards without it; quite annoying.

A student with a medical problem could not attend the first day of classes at Santiago Canyon College, a junior college in Orange California. The student sent all the faculty she was to take classes from e-mail notifying them that she may not be able to attend the first day of class. The notification was sent on Friday before the Monday classes began, thinking she was giving two days notice. Two of the faculty, allegedly, did not read their e-mail and gave the student’s classroom seat to other students. The faculty claimed they did not have enough time to read all their e-mail.

This blog sent the college a request for their drop policy. The request was made August 25, 2011 and no reply has yet been received.

We do rate this college extremely high for friendliness. It seems that the college president has mandated a friendly policy which is most apparent when you interact with any of the college staff and faculty.  It is our opinion that they really need to provide a more friendly business process.

Watch & View The Great Courses On Almost Any Device

11/15/2013 Score Card

It appears that many people are having difficulty listening and viewing The Great Courses on various devices.  I wrote this post when I found that applications for hand held devices, to view and listen to The Great Courses, were getting bad reader reviews.  There is an elegant solution.  It is a bit complicated at first but there are some shortcuts after you go through this process once.  Actually, I found this process quite fast so long as I remembered my log in information.

If you made course purchases from a long time ago, as I did, you might want to ask customer service to put those old courses up on their server.  Call customer support and ask that all your prior purchases be placed into your account as a cloud solution.  The lady that I talked to did this for me for free.  Once your content is in the cloud, you can view and listen using any device that has a web browser such as cell phones, tablets, laptops and desk computers.

This method will bypass downloading any application (Some content can be downloaded but not explained here).  Instead, you will listen and view your courses using your favorite Internet browser.  What this process involves is  to navigate to find “My Digital Library”.  When you buy product from The Great Courses, you also have your own web account.  We will go to that web account and access your digital library and you then can listen and view that content.  Next, are the step by step instructions as to do all this.

Go to their web site: http://www.thegreatcourses.com/

Look upper right of the web page for “My Account”.  The image below shows you what this part of the page looks like.

Mouse click on the words “My Account” and you will be taken to a log in page.

Below is an image of the log in.

Log in using your user name, usually your e-mail address, and password.  Make sure you have selected “I am a returning customer, and my password is”.  Mouse click “Sign In” after you put in your e-mail address and password.  Once you log in, you will see a web page just for you.  BOOK MARK that log in page!   Look along the left side of the web page for “My Digital Library”.

Just below where it shows “My Digital Library” you will see a list of options for you to choose from.  Mouse click on “Stream Courses” if you wish to listen on the device that you are using to log in and you will see the courses ready to hear and view depending upon which course you purchased.  When you select “Stream Courses” the page will change to show what courses you have purchased.  An example of that page is shown below.  Note that we want the “STREAM COURSES” tab selected.

The above web page will show you courses that you can choose to view and listen.  Note that the “Format” column shows that the first item can ONLY be listened to while the titles below can be listened to and viewed.

To see the PLAY function for any listed course, just mouse click on the course name of your choosing.  That course will open up and reveal all the lessons as seen below.  You can jump to any lesson by mouse clicking it.  It then will be ready to be listened to and viewed (if you paid for a viewed product).  I found that the web page offers TWO play buttons.  There is one large one in the screen over the course lesson list and a play button for each lesson to the right side of the screen.  Use the lesson button, as that tells the system which lesson to start.

You can restart any lesson or jump to any other lesson you wish.  You can even scroll forward or backward inside any lesson by using the large dark screen (large dark screen means audio only course) over the lesson lists and using the mouse click on the portion shown below showing lesson progress.  Place your mouse toward the bottom of that dark screen and controls will appear.  Place your mouse pointer at the end of the progress bar and you can slide that back and forth to reposition where the lesson will start again.

Look at the image above.  Note the very small red looking box with the title “Course Guide”.  If that appears on your screen, you can mouse click on that icon and download it into your computer which I strongly recommend.  You can then read along (laptop and desktop only) while the program progresses or read it before or after the lesson.  Just remember that multiple exposure to the same content results in better retention.

I have used the method described above to view and listen to The Great Courses on the following devices:

  • Cell Phone:   Using a cell phone is a bit of a pain because the log in screen, already small, needs to be expanded by finger spreading your screen image outward.  Also, your cell phone air charges will apply because you might be listening using cell towers.  If your in a WiFi location, force the phone to use WiFi only.
  • NEXIS 7 First Generation:   This worked very well so long as you don’t move the Nexis.  It was very annoying that whenever I moved the Nexis, the web page would change from landscape to portrait or reverse and the stream would stop and reset the content.  There is a control to lock the screen from rotating.  Ultimate Rotation Control.
  • MacBook Air:  Using a laptop or desk computer was by far the best solution.

Can Not Open Pages Document After Macintosh OS Maverick Update

Can Not Open Pages Document After Macintosh OS Maverick Update

11/04/2013 Score Card

Just after I performed the Maverick (10.9) system update on my MacBook Air, I found that some of my Pages documents would not open.  I was told in a dialog box on my computer screen  that I needed a new Pages version and I was directed to the App Store.  The App Store showed that I had the current version.   I discovered that Maverick did update my older versions of iLife programs but failed to delete the former software.  It seems that some of my former documents were saved with the current new Pages version.  All of the iWork applications were now in the Applications folder as individual programs and not in the iWork ’09 folder.  Just to cover any future problems, I copied the iWork ’09 folder into my airport backup drive and then deleted that folder from my Applications folder and rebooted the computer.  Now there is no problem.  All my old Pages documents open up properly.
