AAA keeps changing our separate billing that my wife and I have for our separate accounts.  For example, I have a personal umbrella insurance, to only cover me, but all of a sudden my wife appears on the billing for this account.  I was sent a rebate check for an account that my wife was paying for.  They keep changing our billing.

The Week Magazine had me log in with one of my e-mail addresses and then gave me an account number.  I tried to renew the publication and used my e-mail address in the first login field and the account number in the second field.  This did not work. I called customer service and they said to add one or two zero’s before my account number and see if that would work.  It did not.  I decided to select the option that I forgot my password.  I had this company send me the procedures to reset.  I followed those procedures.  I was asked to check my e-mail for the account.  Nothing appeared in my e-mail account or my junk folder.
I then went to this web site: https://theweek.com/login.   My login did work using my e-mail and account number.  This process took way too long to complete.

COSTCO  sent me, by snail mail, an offer for receiving a $20 shop card if I signed up for a auto renewal for my account.  The offer described going to Costco.com.  They gave me a Membership Number.   I already had a COSTCO login for my account with them.  When I went to that web site address and logged in there was absolutely NO indication,  no offer, to get a FREE $20 Costco Shop Card.

POPULAR MECHANICS sent me a snail mail bill showing that I owed $12.00 but if I pay now I get a -$3.00 reduction making my new bill $9.00.  Included in the snail mail envelope was a small flyer “PAY INSTANTLY AT pay.pooularmechanics.com.  I do not like making out checks and mailing the payments so I went to their web site address.  At that web site they allow me to pay the full amount but not the three dollar savings.    I decided to call them and wade through their rather long automated phone responses to talk to a liver person.  That person was able to give me the discount.  Why is it that the letter they sent me included a web site for payment card which failed to offer the discount?

BEST GUESS:  It is my best guess that these companies utterly fail to shop their own product.  What I mean by this is they do not seem to take the time to try to put themselves into the role of customer and try to log into their test customer account, view their account, buy their product.

ANOHER ISSUE:   It pains me to spend extra time to get anything completed that goes beyond normal expected time to complete any purchase or resolving any problem.  I do not have time for YOUR company problems.

How To Get Rid Of Political E-Mail In Apple Mail

Some time ago I made the mistake of donating some money to a political candidate.  That was a mistake.  My e-mail address was provided to a really large group of other candidates so my mail box quickly began to get filled with all sorts of political e-mail.  They all were asking for money.   I recommend you send donations by snail mail and NOT use any of our e-mail addresses in any way.

Here is my solution.

1:  If you feel like donating to any politician using e-mail, use one of your seldom used return e-mail address in ALL correspondence.  This solution only helps a little.  If you need a quick e-mail address, I recommend getting one from Google, which is a real simple process.

2:  You will be getting a lot of political e-mail so here is how to get rid of it using Macintosh Mail:

Open any one of your political e-mails that you received and look carefully at the top of the e-mail where the header information is.   There are typically four lines at the top left corner:

Line #1 is in bold letters and shows you who sent you the message.

Line #2  shows a short sentence about what the message contains or is about.
Line #3 is TO: (your name appears here.)
Line #4 Reply-To: shows the e-mail address for the sender.

It is a rather simple process.  Just use your mouse and right click on line 1 or 4 and a drop down menu appears. Select “Block Contact” and no more messages should be seen any more from this address.  But, all this does is you no longer will see any of their e-mail in your message box.

You have another option and that is to find all the past and current e-mails from this sender and DELETE them all.  To do this, again right mouse click on line 1 or 4 and now choose the menu option to Search for: “(line 1 contents “.    Once you have chosen this option your Mail computer screen should show all the messages it found from this sender.  Take your mouse and left mouse click on the top message and then carefully scroll down to the bottom of all those messages and now press SHIFT key, keep that key down and right click on the bottom message.  When you have done this, all those messages should turn blue color telling you that you have now selected all of them.  Do a simple right mouse click on any one of those blue messages and another rather large menu will show.  You have a lot of options to choose from.  I choose to Delete but you can also do other actions.

Next, tell your computer what to do with deleted e-mail.  Go to Preferences > Junk Mail.  I chose to move all the junk mail to the Trash.

I hope this helps.

that turned in Donald John Trump’s favor after he declared

his candidacy for President of the United States;

Whereas, on February 27, 2017, and March 6, 2017, the

Chinese Government granted preliminary approval of 38

new trademarks to Donald John Trump and one of his

property consultancy said he had never seen so many applications

approved so expeditiously, and the approvals

closely followed President Trump’s decision to honor the

Whereas President Trump did not first seek or obtain the

consent of Congress before accepting any of these trademark

benefits from China;

Whereas President Trump owns approximately 77 percent of

the Trump Old Post Office LLC, which holds a lease

to curry favor with Donald John Trump and, whereas,

some diplomats have said spending money at Trump’s

hotel is an easy, friendly gesture to the new President;

Whereas, in late January 2017, a lobbying firm working for

from foreign states derived from their patronage of the

Trump International Hotel in Washington, DC;

Whereas President Trump owns Trump Tower, a mixed-use

skyscraper in New York City and at least two tenants of

Trump Tower are entities owned by foreign states, including—

(1) the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China,

which is owned by China; and

(2) Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority, which

is owned by the United Arab Emirates;

Whereas President Trump did not first seek or obtain the

consent of Congress before accepting any of the benefits

from foreign states derived from their patronage of the

Trump Tower in New York City;

the show;

Whereas President Trump has not sought or obtained the

consent of Congress before accepting benefits from the

United Kingdom, or any other foreign government, in the

form of licensing fees for ‘‘The Apprentice.’’;

Whereas President Trump’s travel to resorts in which he has

while such resorts receive the benefit of publicity;

Whereas President Trump appointed Retired Lieutenant

General Michael Flynn to serve as National Security Advisor;

Whereas, on January 26, 2017, Acting Attorney General

Sally Yates warned White House Counsel Don McGahn

Whereas, on March 20, 2017, Director James Comey testified

before Congress that the FBI was investigating Russian

interference with the 2016 United States Presidential

election and whether there was any collusion with

the Trump campaign;

Whereas, on May 9, 2017, while the FBI was investigating

whether there was any collusion between the Trump campaign

and Russia, President Trump fired FBI Director

James Comey;

Whereas in his letter informing Director James Comey that

he was being terminated, President Trump said, ‘‘While

I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate

occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless

concur with the judgment of the Department of Justice

that you are not able to effectively lead the Bureau.’’;

Whereas, on May 12, 2017, while speaking in a nationally

televised interview about his decision to fire Director

James Comey, President Trump said, ‘‘And in fact when

I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said you know,

this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made up

story, it’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an

election that they should have won.’’;

Whereas, according to a published report, President Trump

told Russian officials, ‘‘I just fired the head of the FBI.

He was crazy, a real nut job. . . I faced great pressure

because of Russia. That’s taken off.’’;

Whereas, on May 12, 2017, President Trump tweeted,

‘‘James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of

our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!’’;

Whereas, on June 22, 2017, President Trump tweeted, ‘‘With

all of the recently reported electronic surveillance, intercepts

unmasking and illegal leaking of information,  I

have no idea . . . whether there are ‘tapes’ or recordings

Whereas, on March 4, 2017, President Trump tweeted, ‘‘Terrible!

Just found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’

in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found.

This is McCarthyism!’’ and, ‘‘How low has President

Obama gone to tap my phones during the very sacred

election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick)

guy!’’;

Whereas, on March 20, 2017, at a hearing of the Permanent

there was any information supporting President Trump’s

allegation that President Obama had wiretapped President

Trump;

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, President Trump

revealed that the United States had two nuclear submarines

near North Korea;

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at his Mar-a-Lago

Club, President Trump discussed a ballistic missile test

by North Korea in an unsecured dining terrace in view

of club dining patrons;

Whereas President Trump has appointed his son-in-law,

Jared Kushner, to serve as an envoy to foreign leaders,

despite having no diplomatic experience;

Whereas United States foreign policy has long been based on

both our nation’s interest as well as our values, including

democracy, freedom of the press, and promotion of

human rights;

Whereas, on April 3, 2017, when speaking about Egyptian

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, President Trump said,

‘‘We agreed on so many things. I just want to let everybody

know, in case there was any doubt, that we are very

much behind President al-Sisi. He’s done a fantastic job

in a very difficult situation.’’;

Whereas President al-Sisi rose to power in a coup, and in his

country antigovernment protests have been banned, freedom

of press and freedom of religion have been repressed,

some independent human rights groups have

been banned, and it has been estimated that 60,000 political

prisoners have been detained;

Whereas, on April 29, 2017, President Trump invited Philippines

President Rodrigo Duterte to visit him at the

White House, despite the fact that Duterte has been accused

of extrajudicial killings of drug suspects;

shake German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s hand in an

Oval Office meeting;

Whereas, on May 25, 2017, President Trump pushed aside

Montenegro Prime Minister Dusko Markovic in order to

move to the front of a group of NATO leaders;

Whereas President Trump has been slow to fill critical diplomatic

posts including the United States Ambassadors to

Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and other State

Department positions that are vital to our nation’s security;

Whereas, on January 27, 2017, President Trump issued an

executive order that banned nationals from seven Muslim-

majority countries from entering the United States

for at least 90 days, banned admission of all refugees for

four months, indefinitely blocked refugees from Syria,

and contained language prioritizing the admission of non-

Muslims from majority Muslim nations;

John Kelly said, ‘‘This is not a travel ban . . . This is

not – I repeat, not – a ban on Muslims. . .’’;

Whereas, on January 31, 2017, White House Press Secretary

Sean Spicer said, ‘‘First of all, it’s not a travel ban.’’;

Whereas, on February 3, 2017, U.S. District Court Judge

James Robart in the state of Washington blocked implementation

of the travel ban nationwide;

Whereas, on February 9, 2017, a three-judge panel of the

U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled against

reinstating the travel ban;

Whereas, on March 6, 2017, President Trump issued a revised

executive order that removed Iraq from the list of

nations from which immigration would be temporarily

banned, and no longer contained language indefinitely

banning Syrian refugees or calling for prioritized admission

for non-Muslims fleeing majority Muslim nations;

Whereas, on March 15, 2017, U.S. District Court Judge Derrick

Watson in the state of Hawaii blocked implementation

of President Trump’s revised executive order, noting

that when Mr. Trump was asked during the presidential

campaign if he was pulling back from a ‘‘Muslim ban,’’

Mr. Trump said, ‘‘I don’t think it’s a rollback. In fact,

you could say it’s an expansion. I‘m looking now at territories.

People were so upset when I used the word Muslim.

Oh, you can’t use the word Muslim. Remember this.

And I’m okay with that, because I’m talking about territory

instead of Muslim.’’;

Whereas Judge Watson also noted that Senior White House

Advisor Stephen Miller had told Fox News that the revised

executive order would have the ‘‘same basic policy

outcome for the country,’’ and that Rudolph Giuliani had

explained the origin of the original executive order by

saying, ‘‘When øMr. Trump¿ first announced it, he said

‘Muslim ban.’ He called me up. He said, ‘Put a commission

together. Show me the right way to do it legally.’ ’’;

Whereas, on May 25, 2017, the U.S. Court of Appeals for

the Fourth Circuit upheld a preliminary injunction blocking

President Trump’s revised executive order, saying it

‘‘drips with religious intolerance, animus, and discrimination.’’;

Whereas, on June 5, 2017, President Trump tweeted, ‘‘People,

the lawyers and courts can call it whatever they

want, but I am calling it what we need and what it is,

a TRAVEL BAN!’’;

Whereas, on June 26, 2017, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed

to hear a challenge by the Trump Administration to rulings

blocking full implementation of the President’s revised

executive order;

Whereas, on June 29, 2017, President Trump tweeted, ‘‘I

heard poorly rated @MorninglJoe speaks badly of me

(don’t watch anymore). Then how come low I.Q. Crazy

Mika, along with Psycho Joe, came…to Mar-a-Lago 3

nights in a row around New Year’s Eve, and insisted on

joining me. She was bleeding badly from a face-lift. I said

no!’’;

Whereas, in a February 4, 2017, tweet, President Trump referred

to a Federal judge with whom he disagreed as a

‘‘so-called judge’’;

Whereas, in a May 9, 2017, President Trump referred to the

United States Senate Minority Leader as ‘‘Cryin’ Chuck

Schumer’’ in a tweet;

Whereas, on April 28, 2017, President Trump referred to

United States Senator Elizabeth Warren as ‘‘Pocahontas’’

in a speech to the National Rifle Association;

Whereas President Trump has called press reports, ‘‘fake

news’’ and in some instances his administration has prohibited

video recordings of White House press briefings;

Whereas President Trump used Twitter to circulate a video

of him violently wrestling a man covered by a CNN logo,

which, according to the Reporters Committee on Freedom

of the Press, was a ‘‘threat of physical violence against

journalists . . øand¿ beneath the office of the presidency.’’;

Whereas free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy;

Whereas, on January 6, 2017, the Office of the Director of

National Intelligence detailed Russian efforts to influence

the 2016 Presidential election, stating, ‘‘We assess Russian

President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign

in 2016 aimed at the U.S. presidential election.

Russia’s goals were to undermine public faith in the U.S.

democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and

harm her electability and potential presidency. We further

assess Putin and the Russian Government developed

a clear preference for President-elect Trump.’’;

Whereas President Trump has refused to acknowledge, unequivocally,

that Russia meddled in the 2016 Presidential

election, saying, instead, things like ‘‘I think it very well

could be Russia but I think it could very well have been

other countries. . . I think a lot of people interfere.’’;

Whereas, on June 6, 2017, while on foreign soil, President

Trump criticized former President Obama, saying, ‘‘The

thing I have to mention is that Barack Obama when he

was President found out about this in terms of if it were

Russia, found out about it in August, now the election

was in November, that’s a lot of time he did nothing

about it. Why did he do nothing about it? He was told

it was Russia by the CIA as I understand it . . . I think

what happened was that he thought that Hillary Clinton

was going to win the election and he said let’s not do

anything about it.’’;

Whereas President Obama issued repeated warnings to Russian

officials, including a direct warning to Russian

President Vladimir Putin, approved a cyberwarfare campaign

against Russia, and expelled Russian diplomats

from the United States;

Whereas, on July 9, 2017, President Trump tweeted, ‘‘Putin

& I discussed forming an impenetrable Cyber Security

unit so that election hacking, & many other negative

things, will be guarded. . .’’;

Whereas President Trump has not empaneled a commission

to investigate Russian interference with the 2016 United

States Presidential election, but has empaneled a commission

to investigate unfounded claims that there were

as many as 5,000,000 fraudulent votes in the United

States Presidential election, which President Trump has

claimed cost him the popular vote;

Whereas, on June 29, 2017, the United States Senate passed

S. 722, the Countering Iran’s Destabilizing Activities Act

of 2017, which included sanctions on Russia, by a vote

of 98–2;

Whereas President Trump’s Administration has sought

changes to S. 722 to make it more friendly to Russia;

Whereas, on June 1, 2017, President Trump pulled out of

the Paris Climate Agreement, a historic pact among

nearly 200 parties, including Russia and China, to reduce

emissions that raise global temperatures, put lives and

property at risk, and imperil the planet upon which we

live, and, Syria and Nicaragua were the only nations that

did not sign the Paris Agreement, and Nicaragua objected

because it felt the agreement did not go far

enough;

Whereas 97 percent of climate scientists agree that human

activity has impacted climate change;

Whereas, on May 28, 2017, after transatlantic meetings, German

Chancellor Angela Merkel concluded that President

Trump was not the kind of traditionally reliable partner

for Germany and Europe on whom they have been able

to depend in the past, saying that traditional alliances

were no longer as steadfast. Merkel stated that Europe

should, ‘‘really take our fate into our own hands . . .’’

and said, ‘‘The times in which we could rely fully on others

– they are somewhat over.’’;

Whereas President Trump’s opposition to the Paris Climate

Agreement put the United States at odds on climate

change with the rest of the G–20 at its July 2017 meeting

in Hamburg, Germany;

Whereas President Trump failed to secure an international

agreement at the July 2017 G–20 meeting to counter the

threat posed by a nuclear-armed North Korea;

Whereas President Trump’s first cabinet appointments had

the smallest percentage of women and nonwhites combined

than any since President Reagan;

Whereas the gender pay gap at President Trump’s White

House is more than double the national pay gap;

Whereas, on January 21, 2017, President Trump’s spokesperson

said, ‘‘Photographs of the inaugural proceedings

were intentionally framed in a way, in one particular

Tweet, to minimize the enormous support that had gathered

on the National Mall . . . That was the largest audience

to witness an inauguration, period. Both in person

and around the globe.’’;

Whereas in support of his assertion about the inaugural

crowd size, President Trump’s spokesperson said, ‘‘We

know that 420,000 people used DC Metro public transit

yesterday, which compares to 317,000 that it used for

President Obama’s last inaugural,’’ but transit officials

said that 570,557 riders used the transit system on January

20, 2017, as compared with 1.1 million trips the

day of President Obama’s first inauguration and 782,000

trips the day of President Obama’s second inauguration;

Whereas, on February 16, 2017, President Trump said his

2016 election victory was, ‘‘the biggest electoral college

win since Ronald Reagan’’;

Whereas Donald J. Trump received 304 electoral votes in

2016;

Whereas Barrack Obama received 332 electoral votes in

2012, and 365 electoral votes in 2008;

Whereas Bill Clinton received 379 electoral votes in 1996,

and 370 electoral votes in 1992;

Whereas George H. W. Bush received 426 electoral votes in

1988; and

Whereas when President Trump was presented with facts

about the size of his predecessors’ electoral victory margins

at a press conference on February 16, 2017, he responded,

‘‘I don’t know, I was given that information. I

actually, I’ve seen that information around.’’: Now, therefore,

be it

1 Resolved, That it is the sense of the House of Rep2

resentatives that—

3 (1) based on the conduct described in the pre4

7 (2) President Trump should—

8 (A) release his tax returns;

9 (B) place his private business assets in a

3 (E) seek congressional consent for any and

4 all emoluments he has received from foreign

6 (F) refrain from using Twitter inappropri7

ately, including refraining from posting com8

ments that could adversely impact United

10 (G) support the First Amendment, support

11 freedom of the press, refrain from calling re12

porting ‘‘fake news’’, refrain from posting video

13 of himself wrestling with a press logo, and stop

14 limiting full electronic press access to White

15 House press briefings;

16 (H) promote democracy, freedom of the

17 press, and human rights in foreign policy;

18 (I) unequivocally acknowledge that Russia

19 interfered in the 2016 United States Presi20

dential election, and work to protect our elec21

toral process from any future foreign inter22

ference;

Modifying Yaesu FT-817 To Work On 60 Meters

Modifying Yaesu FT-817 To Work On 60 Meters

09/25/2020 Score Card Comments 1 comment

Following is a story of how I found a solution to make my very old Yaesu FT-817 work on 60 meters.  If you have the Yaesu FT-817ND there is no need to modify the radio as it is designed to include 60 meters! This process of modifying the older Yaesu FT-817 is quite difficult.  I do NOT recommend you attempting this for a few really good reasons.  I was told by a former Yaesu repair person that this radio has undergone changes and it is likely you will find a solder point solution that pretends to work for your radio as describe on the Internet but it might NOT work for your radio.  Yaesu technical support has a cheat sheet showing them radio serial numbers and how they correspond to the manufactured electronics.  This tells me that there are probably different versions of the FT-817 and possibly different solder point switch solutions.  Also, you really need to know how to solder.  You need the correct tools and know how to use them.  The desoldering and soldering of the switch points is in very tight space making the task rather difficult.  Also, the process of uploading frequencies into the radio is a bit tricky in that you will get RT software error messages and you need to know how to solve each error.

I have had a Yaesu FT-817 ham radio for a very long time and have never seen the need to use it until now.  I participated in a local county Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) Zoom meeting where I had report to our city RACES group what took place during that meeting.  A part of that Zoom meeting covered a ham band I had never heard of before, that being, 60 meters.  I began to research this band and found out that it was created in 2002.  I then found out that there was a weekly check in for operators from each city who would use their 60 meter radios and reply to the county RACES operator when they asked if there were any stations for their city.  I then found out that our city was not on the list for cities that had checked in.  I have a lot of ham radios and I looked around and discovered that the ONLY 60 meter radio I had was a Yaesu FT-817 but it was not expected to work on 60 meters until you found a way to modify it.  I pulled the radio out from storage and tired it out.  This radio is low power, called a QRP, or reduced power radio.  I then went to Ham Radio Outlet and purchased software for the radio so I could program frequencies into it.

www.rtsystemsinc.com

YAESU ADMS-4A-USB, which was labeled as “Advanced Data Management System for the Yaesu FT-817/817D”.  I really like RT system software.  I was really pleased to discover this software was available for the Mac computer.  I then created a list of frequencies for the radio including 60 meters.  There are some important restrictions for using this band.  One restriction is to stick to 5 frequencies:

  • 5.332 MHz. USB
  • 5.348 MHz. USB
  • 5.368 MHz. USB
  • 5.373 MHz. USB
  • 5.405 MHz. USB

I then tried to input the full list of frequencies into the radio including the 60 meter ones and then tried transmitting into my 50 ohm dummy load.  All the 2 meter and 440 frequencies worked but not the 60 meters.  I kept getting a “TX ERR” or transmit error.  The radio would not transmit.  I then started a really long investigation that took weeks using the Internet.  I had a phone conversation with a former Yaesu technical support person who warned me that the Yaesu FT-817 had a number of changes and technical support had a cheat sheet where the serial number of the radio told them which version of radio they were dealing with.  This hinted to me that maybe the solder switches might be different depending on which version of radio I had.  I even sent Yaesu technical support for some help but I was refused with this response “I am sorry but as the manufacturer of the radio we are not permitted to assist in modifying the radio.”  I discovered that there are a LOT of web sites devoted to modifying this radio.  Suddenly I got a bit lucky and found out that there are some solder point switches inside the radio that can change the capabilities of that radio.  I tried one solder point solution but that failed.

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING FAILED FOR MY RADIO. (It is reported that the solder points shown next might work on some FT-817 models.).

(You just might want to start with this modification first and then progress to the one explained later in this post.  A possible reason for these two solutions is the radio may have gone through changes.)

To extend the HF coverage to 500kHZ per band.
Extend VHF and UHF coverage.

Should be shorted:  JP4006, JP4007, JP4008.
Should be open:  JP4004, JP4005, JP4009.
Leave all other jumpers, 1,2,3, as they are.
After making the solder switch changes and reassemble the whole radio, apply power while pressing F and V/M buttons.

This did not work for me.

A ham radio friend sent me a web site that presented a different solder switch solution, shown next.  https://www.qsl.net/bg9bl/ft817/ft817.htm.  I tried it and it worked.

Should be shorted:  JP4009, JP4008, JP4007,  JP4006.
Should be open:  JP4005, JP4004, JP4003, JP4002, JP4001.

I the image below the solder jumpers are numbered 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1. as you see them below in the image.  You only know this by being shown a drawing from the Internet. They are not labeled on the circuit board.

FT-817 Solder Point Solution

Let me first show you some tips on how to open and close the radio.

  • Remove all the screws holding the case together.
  • When removing the shoulder strap put those 4 screws in a separate place as they are longer.
  • Be really careful lifting the radio cover holding the speaker because there is a speaker wire that needs to be pulled out of the circuit board carefully.
  • The radio cover that has the battery door is a pain to open.  Look carefully and you will see one screw that has a plastic piece under it.  Loosen the screw a bit and then slide that piece away from the battery door.
  • The opposite side from the slider there are door tabs fitting into the case so you need to pull the door out from these holdings.
    The door then can be removed if it is swung out from the latch.  I removed the internal battery.
  • Once both the top and bottom radio covers are removed, you next need to pull the front panel CAREFULLY from the radio.  There are really simple plastic clips holding the front piece but there is a short ribbon cable that is really tricky to deal with so be careful you do not pull on this cable.  I use my finger nails to lift up the two top and two bottom plastic clips to allow me to move the front piece away.
  • The ribbon cable that runs between the front panel and the main radio body is really tricky to disconnect.  I decided to remove the ribbon at the radio head and NOT the body.  The trick is there is a plastic latch, (the brown piece in the image below) that needs to be moved so the ribbon can be withdrawn.

Once the front panel was free, I put it into my Panavise.  I then performed the solder point connection and removal of solder to the solder switches listed below (see image above).

Should be shorted:  JP4009, JP4008, JP4007,  JP4006.
Should be open:  JP4005, JP4004, JP4003, JP4002, JP4001.

Once you perform the solder switch changes, put the case back together.  For me, replacing the ribbon cable was a pain.  I had to use thin nose pliers to center the cable and then use my finger nails on both sides to make sure the cable was into the connector all the way.  It really helps to use headband magnifier to see more exactly what you are doing.

Pay particular attention to replace the shoulder strap to the radio so the microphone strap holder is on the same side as the microphone connector.

Connect a 50 ohm dummy load to the radio antenna jack or attach a good working 60 meter antenna.

Connect the power cable to a good source of power.

Connect the microphone to the radio.

GET THE RADIO READY TO RECEIVE THE COMPUTER FILE

Connect the RT Software cables to your computer and the radio.
Launch the software so you can input frequencies.
The RT software also has an important menu (Settings > Radio Menu Settings).  I always connect my dummy load and antennas for 60 meters to the REAR antenna jack.  I choose “Common > Rear HF Antenna”.
Input your frequency list into that software.  I have found two different lists of frequencies.  A ham operator friend sent this explanation to me:

“Yaesu radios typically are programmed to display the center frequencies on 60 meters but actually operate on what are known as dial frequencies on other radios. The USB dial frequencies are 1.5 kHz lower than the center frequencies.”

5.332 MHz.   5.33050 MHz Ch 1

5.348 MHz.   5.34650 MHz Ch 2

5.368 MHz.   5.35700 MHz Ch 3

5.373 MHz.   5.37150 MHz Ch 4

5.405 MHz.   5.40350 MHz Ch 5

Make sure you add the 60 meter frequencies to the RT software.

Now we need to restart the radio and pray it works.

  • Pressing F and V/M at the same time and then press the power switch.
  • Then press HOME and POWER to reset the radio CPU.
  • Turn the radio OFF.

Next get the radio ready to accept the RT Software.

Press the left and right MODE keys at the top of the radio and while those keys are pressed, apply power.
The radio display should show “CLONE MODE”
Press down the C key under the radio display screen.
Using the computer RT Software, go to the menu  and select COMMUNICATIONS > SEND DATA TO RADIO.
Mouse select the SEND DATA TO RADIO to start the file sending  into the radio.
You should then see a computer splash screen showing you the loading of data from the RT software into the radio.  The screen will show a left to right bar moving across revealing the loading into the radio.
When the loading has completed turn the radio OFF.
Now turn the radio back ON and you should now see your frequencies have loaded into the radio.
Go to one of your 60 meter frequencies by rotating the “SEL” for select knob just to the left of the radio display.  ONLY use this knob to choose the programmed channels.  As soon as you rotate the large knob you go out of your pre programmed channel and fine tune the frequency.

While on a 60 meter frequency, press your microphone button and you should see the RED light turn on from the face plate of the radio showing you that it is transmitting on 60 meters.  If this happens, it appears that the prior modification has worked.

Counterpoise is required for best operation.

You need to add a stranded, not solid, insulated wire to the rear ground connection of the radio to help balance your antenna operation.  The best counterpoise is 1/4-wavelength at the lowest frequency you intend to use.    “Without a significant formal “counterpoise”, we have often undesirable case of the coax shield serving as most or all of the ad-hoc counterpoise; the “other half of the antenna”.

An interesting counterpoise solution can be found here:  https://www.qsl.net/sv1uy/counterpoisekit.html

I truly hope this description has helped and you are successful in using and enjoying this radio.

When you connect your Yaesu FT-817 to a 60 meter antenna try to tune the antenna with a passive SWR analyzer to avoid a mismatch in impedance.  Most ham stick antennas allow you to slide the end tip portion up and down and lock that part with small screws.  Once you think you have a very low standing wave ratio, SWR,  reading then lock that antenna length.   A further test is to attach a SWR meter between the radio and antenna to make sure there is a good impedance match when you transmit.  You really want to avoid reflected waves coming back into the radio because the antenna was a mismatch.

Opinion

A lot of politics is dealing with values of one group and trade offs against another group.  Not only politicians but also the American public have to deal with weighing the interests of one group and maybe not another group.

Let us take brief snapshots of past and current political actions of national party members and their followers and possibly reveal the advantage for some but hurt, if any, for the “other” group.

The evangelicals believe in pro-life or banning abortions.   The reason?  To support the right to life of the unborn child.  This same group support Donald Trump who has allegedly failed to protect thousands of American citizens by his alleged incompetence at helping to fight the pandemic.  So we save how many expected babies come to life from the possible actions of a political group?   And then we see older people die, up to 120,000 from Trump’s inaction.

Do you see the contradiction for the evangelicals that they support life and also death?
