This web site has been in existence since 2006.  The web site started just after taking a web development class at a California State university.  The class was excellent.  Some time, not sure when, I enrolled in Google’s Adsense.  This is an application where you can join Google and they will help place their managed advertisements into your web site and pay you some small amount of money for showing their advertisements.  A web site can begin costing you just over fifty dollars a year including domain name registration or more depending upon how smart your decisions are setting up your web site.  I was hoping that Adsense might help me defray some of my hosting fees.  This process began running off the rails when I used my university e-mail.  At the time, I was a full time staff member.  I was totally unaware that, probably because I had take that web site class, the university made a student e-mail account for me.  When I signed up for Google Adsense I used my supposed staff e-mail which had the same user name but apparent different passwords.  For some incredibly stupid reason, the unknown by me, my student e-mail may have been substituted instead of my staff e-mail into the Adsense process.  The alleged criminal act of theft took place at some point when Google assumed that a student account could not own a web site.  By having a “.edu” at the end of my e-mail account and apparently having that e-mail arise out of a university student list suddenly makes it the property of the university?  What an incredible conclusion and near criminal theft.  Does this mean that the university now owns my car and home because I have an .edu at the end of my e-mail address?  How colossal stupid can you get?

Web site looses Google Adsense account to state university
Google Adsense account login is diverted to a state university

To try to regain possession of my Adsense account, I am prompted to follow a series of steps starting at the Google Adsense web page.   After I finish doing the Adsense login, I am told that “Your Google Account is managed by xxx.edu.  I am then sent to the university student portal and then to the a web page entitled Google Apps where it dead ends.  I am told to contact the university Google Account Manager.  The university does not have one.  The reason for this is student e-mail accounts were shut down on the university servers years ago and transferred to Google.

I continually run into this prejudice where students are not thought to be adults by universities and businesses.  They switch views when students pay their fees or students come in with their parents.  Now I see that Google allegidly may have same prejudice against students.

August 18, 2018 a few days after putting up this post, an IT person at my university who I respect,  called to inform me that this problem was all Google’s fault.  Google allegedly assumes that if you are a student at a college or university that your web site creations are the property of the university if you use your student e-mail.  I thus lost control of my Adsense account because Google saw my Adsense login as being a student.  If Google did indeed take this approach, how utterly imbecilic, moronic, halfwitted or if you did not get the meaning of those prior terms, stupid!

The university campus IT person advised me to use another Adsense account which I had already done to bypass this problem.  But, any profit in the old account, I will never know about.   Banks and airlines tack on fees to gain extra profit.  Google, allegedly, only needs to obfuscate and be stupid in its policies to gain profit.

If anyone else runs into problems with Google Adsense, there is another option for you to consider.   Individual companies want their advertisements placed into your web site.  This process is typically called “affiliate program”.  If you look at the bottom of each page of this web site, you will see two affiliate advertisements.  One is from Linksky and the other from Namecheap.  I use both those products to help serve this web site for you.  Just read carefully how each program works.  Some of your best paying affiliate offers require that you read page after page of legal stipulations.  I advise you to read every word and abide by their requirements.

Mythology vs Science

Mythology vs Science

08/09/2014 Score Card

How does one evaluate the truthfulness, the correctness, of a philosophical view?  Let me propose to you that science, because it is based on a rigorous investigation using empirical methods that actually attempt to answer questions without bias, is the correct method. Technology sometimes verifies scientific discoveries as being true because the technology, when it works, is validation. Science also entails on-going testing to ensure that a belief or viewpoint that we thought was a truth is tested again, and again, to see if the results change or not. Science should be used as something close to an ultimate decider of what to believe if you want to get at the truth. Unfortunately, philosophy is, to great measure, the pursuit of viewpoints put forth by arguments that hopefully make sense. This sort of runs counter to science where scientists can speculate when trying to come up with a theory to test — but they go way beyond speculation and move ahead to test any thesis they come up with. If there is no tethering of the belief to real science testing then philosophy becomes a belief system and not a truth system. There has been a whole long history of singular and system beliefs that we now term mythology because the facts fail to support the former beliefs. Old mythologies fall out of favor because humanity has acquired more understanding of its surroundings, and, the whys behind a lot of former mysteries. The most prominent example in my mind is the the discovery that we descended not from the heavens but from other primates. The theory of evolution is now a fact. The religious explanation, that we were created by god, is now a preposterous notion.

There are still mythologies that persist for whatever reason: ignorance, romanticism, or any other reason where people cling to an old idea that science may have disproved. This retention factor of clinging to our mythologies is quite powerful when the belief seems to work for the individual, the family, the tribe, or the nation. Why drop a belief if it works? Tribal pressure often times is at work to perpetuate rituals and beliefs that were handed down from prior generations but are wrong when measured by science. It is interesting to now appreciate the tie-in with science and philosophy. It is also noteworthy that religion thinks science is a threat, and why not?  Science is quite capable of eroding the power of religion because it exposes the untruths. Knowing this, the individual has a choice. Do you want to know the truth, or would you like to cling to tradition? In many cases there is no problem with believing in Santa Claus — so long as no one gets hurt or suffers.

Another human factor exists that may minimize the importance of trying to find the truth of what the real world is all about: it is our personal fear of dying. Our existence is a bit absurd, when we get born, and, it gets even more strange the older we get. We are dumped here for no apparent reason except our mom and dad made the right moves to conceive us. Once we are here we slowly appreciate the wonderment of what life/existence is all about — but there is no inherent purpose — except to survive. We spend not enough time here on Earth, and then die — again, for no apparent reason. Does that not sound really odd?  Once you are dead, this whole experience did not happen because your mind dies and — with that — all memory of what you did.

We are not god’s creation, because science has taught us that we evolved: we were not “created.” We are animals that evolved to the point of gaining intellect where we can understand very completely our own being and lack of purpose beyond survival. Where is the logic in arriving and not staying here forever? Religion does an admirable job of minimizing our fear of dying by promising that there is an afterlife. What a wonderful solution if it were true. Religion creates a wonderful avoidance mechanism where our self-concern of dying is suspended for the longest time. Religion tells us we don’t really die but go to another level of “existence.” Science, on the other hand, does nothing to minimize the fear of death — but tells us there is no heaven and when we die there is nothing more for us and, in fact, we never existed except in the memories of our friends and enemies. Science is cruel in this way and explains why a lot of people would rather believe in the mythology than in the truth. Religion’s purpose, on the other hand, is to comfort us by creating myths that allay our fears.

But, believing in mythologies has some dire results for world politics because people fail to deal with what is real. The mythologies are responsible for killings, which is a bit ironic when you realize that it is the fear of death that binds individuals to their mythology.

Here is a partial list of wrong beliefs that currently take place because populations wish to believe in the mythology rather than in the reality of who we really are:

•    Theocracies should not exist because there is no god and thus there can be no one to interpret the wishes of god upon our political and social decisions. There is a need for clerics in the churches and mosques to support the personal needs that people have for comfort — but not in any building where politics is practiced. Politics deals with real societal problems — and mythology deals with what is not real.

•    Islamic conflicts between Shia and Sunni are stupid because their differences are not really important to the point of killing one another.

•    Conflicts between Israel and other Arab countries pertaining to religious differences seems meaningless.

•    If god did not create us, then why is there an argument against abortion?  Why is a cleric dictating what a woman should do with her body? Clerics should stay out of the medical profession’s decision-making.

•    My favorite example of stupid is when some really stupid person is told by another stupid person to put on a vest of explosives and kill as many people as possible and they will go to heaven and have a huge amount of virgins to do whatever they want. This is is an excellent reason why the Arab nations need a good basic education program, but then again, the clerics need stupid people to be their lemmings and to follow orders without question.

Terrific New Way To Get Electronics Training.

Terrific New Way To Get Electronics Training.

07/09/2014 Score Card

If you wish to get a good education in the field of electronics I would suggest that you first investigate whether a nearby junior college offers this subject and then try to determine how good a job they do at teaching it.  A good indication is to have them tell you how many of their AA degree graduates get jobs in the field.  If you have the money, time and perseverance to take electronic engineering at a college or university that is the best path by far.  Any education institution you consider should be investigated first as to how competent they are.  Please do not assume that all colleges and universities do the same level work.  Some are better than others.  Be aware of private technical colleges as many have problems.   For those people who do not want to enter any regimen for learning electronics but take a more casual approach and just want to self learn the subject there are  a number of options.  I must tell you that holding a degree when looking for a job is very important.  I must confess that I taught myself electronics before graduating from high school.  I did this by reading some amazing books on the subject, building Eico and Heathkit projects.  My parents also fed my passion by handing me home appliances that were broken and gave me a chance to fix them.  I then went on to a junior college and took electronics training for one year before switching to the study of Sociology at a state university.  While in college I joined the Navy Reserves and was sent to Memphis Tennessee for electronics training.  My first good job in electronics was taking care of a television studio, control rooms for audio and TV and edit bays.  I was self taught in video and audio.  I did not have, and still do not have a degree in electronics.  Do not follow my example.  Try to get, at the very least, an AA degree.

I have a library of electronic, video audio, cine, lighting and related fields that is pretty impressive.  I also have a passion for knowledge that covers history, philosophy, science and photography.  For the longest time I have subscribed to The Great Courses, a business that provides education packages in DVD or Internet download.  I have found their products to be excellent.  I wait for their sales where you can really save money.  Just about all their courses are taught by some of the best college and university faculty.  Some courses are better than others and there are rankings showing in their catalog.  I always read the reviews before buying any course.  July 2014 I was shocked to find that they offered an electronics course.  Just about all their courses are humanities and they offer almost no technology titles.  This electronics course was brand new so there were no reviews to help me decide whether to buy it or not.  It was discounted in the catalog and was on sale at a terrific price.  I decided to break my rule of evaluating the review, which there were none being such a new product, and purchased the course.  I did do an Internet search for the professor teaching the course, Richard Wolfson, and the search was quite impressive which tipped the scales for my decision.  Because I purchased a digital download I was able to get the course pretty quickly and copied each lesson into my laptop and Apple Airport Extreme hard drive.  Let me tell you that this course really made my socks roll up and down.  I am really, really, impressed.  Wolfson comes across as having a passion for the subject.  He is really knows what he is talking about.  The lesson progression from basic toward the more complex is excellent to the point of perfect.  As a result, the course outline is very well laid out.

In any technical school you must have a lab segment where you are given lessons where you need to make circuits with components that make sense and then take measurements and report your findings.  This task of going into a lab as part of your education was a complete surprise to me as I figured that this course could not offer this part of the normal education process.  The lab lecture part was a shock for me to view.  It seemed to work.  Another shock for me is this is not a passive only viewing experience but you are expected to actually perform the experiments on your own.  I must tell you that you will be required to go out and buy some simple electronic components but that in itself should be part of your education.  Going into an electronics parts house is definitely an education.  There are even short quizzes thrown in where you are expected to pause your viewing of the lesson and perform some calculation or duty and record your results.  I really recommend this course.  At the price I paid, it was a steal.   If you take this course, you should gain a pretty darn good electronics training.  Just pay particular attention to the safety issues so you do not get hurt.

One Problem With Iran Is Leadership Philosophy.

One Problem With Iran Is Leadership Philosophy.

07/07/2014 Score Card

I sincerely wish that all Arab nations improve upon their political success for the benefit of all the inhabitants of those countries and the world.  It seems, from my point of view, that most Arab nations are challenged to attain leadership that works for the people and not some particular small group.  Arab nations have such a long list of negative choice factors that really hold them back from advancing up to the levels of Europe and North America.    The problems that the Arabs face are many and of their own making.  They stubbornly subscribe to joining religion and the state.  Their religion is elevated to such high regard in areas it was not intended  instead of being a method of comfort.  Tribalism is another factor that separates a countries people.  Libya is currently fractures due to tribal conflicts.  Even more significant is that every nation has an oligarch problem as can be seen in the examples below:

Royalty is the oligarchy = Saudi Arabia
Military is the oligarchy = Egypt
Clerics are the oligarchy = Iran
Economic elite are the oligarchy = United States

It is interesting to note that Egypt was on a trajectory toward more individual freedom, through their Arab spring movement, but the Muslim Brotherhood really overstepped their power too quickly by threatening the Egyptian military business interests.

Another problem for Arab countries, which is rather wide spread in less advanced societies, is the treatment of women as second class citizens.  This adds to the list of just one more divisive factor.

History has not provided good examples of democracy or socialism in Arab countries.  Some of the highest ranked countries in the world subscribe to social democracy and Arab nations seem so far away from arriving at that.

I wish to examine one Arab leader who espouses a particular philosophy and comment on some of its components as an example of how singular individuals in power can command the outcome of a nation.  The person I have chosen is the current ruler of Iran, Ali Khamenei.

Khamenei appears to want a nation where Islam and the state are one.  He seems to believe that Islam without government and a Muslim nation without Islam is meaningless.  He fails to realize that this is may be at the root of the Arab nations being now and will be in the future second or third class countries.  His belief that Islam and state are interconnected results that the clerics in any country will wield significant power if not supreme power.  The very basic problem with this philosophy is it fails to identify who owns the country.  Apparently the clerics own the country because his belief totally leaves out the wishes of the people.  It assumes that anyone who is Muslim is working from the same belief system and the clerics and their followers are one in how to administer the state which is not or never true.  Problem with Khamenei’s philosophy is it assumes people are not diverse in their needs and wants.  Western nations are not perfect but they do have the ability to adjust in a way that a theocracy is not capable.  In western countries, elections are used to “hire” the peoples representatives to administer the country.  Khamenei seems blinded to taking in any possibility that there should be a separation of religion and state.  Religion, in the most basic terms is expected to serve the spiritual needs of the individual.  How it can transcend to governing is a stretch in these modern times.  The caliphate did work for centuries, a long time ago, but one can easily argue that today it is a romantic notion that is flawed for so many reasons.  A caliphate is totalitarian and puts the population in subjugation.  A caliphate relies on one or a few rulers to administer very complex economic and political issues, societies of the system are modified and  planned with input from the people.  A much more efficient system is a well managed bureaucracy where aspect specialization is used for decision making and administering.  The caliphate will perpetuate the nation being somewhat backward because it can not easily adapt to the fast pace modern world, typically holds the population in chains and fails to hold education for its people as important..

It is also suspicious that being a cleric in charge and his belief system elevates them conveniently to being a oligarch class with tremendous personal benefits.

Khamenei belief system fails to identify who owns the  country.  This is incredibly significant because out of this singular fact, a lot follows or extrapolates as to how a country should be administered.   Evidently, for Khamenei, it is not the citizens and for this he is totally wrong.  Any modern nation that fails to realize that the citizens  OWN the country and must have a say in how it is ruled is going to have a very hard time.

As stated before, Khamenie belief system is flawed because it fails to separate religion and state.  This is like mixing water and oil.  It makes the working of the state awkward at the very least and ruinous at the extreme.  Religion’s main effort should be to give individuals comfort by offering answers to questions that can not be truly answered by science, guidance toward every day behavior so all individuals can better live with one another, prayer so that individuals can achieve their own solace when needed, rights of passage so individuals will better cope with life and death issues.  Religion should give more to individual needs rather than political ones.  But, religion with good leadership can move out of the mosque and into social support programs such as the Red Crescent to better aid individual needs.  As the citizens prosper, they can better fulfill the third pillar, zagat, or giving to the less fortunate.  In short, religion has no business getting involved in politics unless issues arise that directly affect it.

In my prior point, I tried to state that Khamenei was overstepping his duties as a religious leader by marrying it to politics.  Khamenei has a flawed political element too.  Khamenei is wrong in his philosophy because he creates a political dictatorship as a result of his philosophy.  He minimizes the voice of each citizen but elevates the cleric’s voice.

The western world is better in some regards because the power base is more diverse, open to self examination and transparent to a degree.  This diverse structure is good but not nearly perfect.  The people think they have the power and do have the opportunity to exercise that power from time to time to change the national political leadership.  The flaw in this system is that there is also a very powerful oligarch group that do exercise tremendous power behind the scenes which often times direct national policies toward ends that have in the past damaged Arab nations.  The reason for this, I call the McLaren rule.  It is a humane trait to try to gain advantage over other individuals or nations if you have the means to do so.  When the group that exercises this power are oligarchs or neocons, the results typically do not end well for humanity.  Americans killing off the American Indians, American slavery, incarcerating the Japanese Americans on the west coast during the second world war and overthrowing the legitimate Iranian government, called the 28 Morad coup, are just a few examples of a country that had the power to wipe out people and process.  Oligarchs can gain political power by use of money, guns or any other means at their disposal.  In the western world, including the United States, the democratic process continuously tries to fend off these efforts with varying degrees of success.  This is not to say that democracy will be devoid of incorrect political acts.  The population of the Untied States, for example, seemed to go along with the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, which, by any means one wishes to evaluate, was immoral, illegal and a disaster if not a war crime.  This achievement was partly done by relying upon leadership that seemed well in charge but held a secret philosophy,  devised lies to further their neocon ideals.  The point I am trying to make is this propensity to gain advantage over others is more absolute and less transparent with a religious group and state being chained together.  Also, with the clerics and politicians in the same house it is that more difficult for the citizens to break them apart and make changes.

Khamenei’s philosophy also creates a cleric oligarchy more commonly called a theocracy.  This is just another word for dictatorship but because he believes that religion and state are connected he makes the mistake of placing the clerics in a power position of being not only a political dictatorship but also a religious oligarchy which gives him and his friends financial and power gains in those two ways.
If you look at the past medieval history of Europe, for example, there were clerics that ruled from castles over vast portions of land. These same clerics were part of the oligarchy or the whole of it.  The similarities to Europe during medieval times and what is happening in the current Arab nations seem similar.  It seems that the Arab world needs to grow out of its medieval class warfare with itself and the Western world.  Ali Khamenei may not be the man for the job because he has pattern his philosophy from fear of Gharbzadegi  or being bitten from and incurring the disease of being westernized.  One of histories lessons is that nations become great when they incorporate the best from other cultures.  Iran should not surrender to Western values in total but maybe incorporate the best aspects that the West has to offer, to make a better Iran.  This may never happen with its current leadership because Ali Khamenei may be as flawed in his philosophy as those who specified the 28 Morad coup, invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan.  It serves the needs of the dictator to find external threats where you can as a reason why you must clamp down upon your own peoples freedoms.

Conclusion:  The Arab nations have been subjugated by political and cultural colonization in the past by Europe and the United States for the longest time.  The McLaren rule will certainly apply to any country not strong enough to stand on its own and thus this intervention from the Western countries should still be suspect.  For an Arab nation to stand as an independent power, maintain its unique identity and culture, it must improve its internal political process and not be weakened by internal strife, inefficient central rule, economic sanctions, and the oligarch’s seeking self gain at the expense of the people who should really rule the country.  Iran has a terrific potential to be a powerful nation because of its people, not its current leaders.
