Evidently donkeys at Marah Land Zoo in Gaza City were dyed with black stripes because real zebras would be too expensive to bring to Gaza.

Let me spin this topic a bit from its original meaning and then turn it back upon itself.

I love to drink zebras.  The coffee store, I seem to frequent, simply has such strong coffee that I had to drink mocha’s to keep from having my eyes well up with tears due to the strong coffee flavor.  The same coffee store’s mocha was a bit harsh, not smooth.  I complained to a barista one day and they suggested that I add white chocolate; what a difference.  The name for the drink was zebra, white and dark chocolate.  When done correctly the drink has a hint of marshmallow but that is when the barista makes the drink perfectly.  I now had a perfect coffee drink with white and dark chocolate.  I order nothing else.

The zebra drink has meaning beyond the delicious sipping of overly strong coffee with dark and white chocolate.  It is a politically correct drink.  It represents white and black America.  Both the dark and light are blended together to formulate a delicious blend, a third if not totally new taste.  I had a sociology teacher tell me that the mixing of the races would meld societies and less conflict would result.  He recommend that we date people from other races.

The Palestinians and Jews are like white and dark chocolate.  I do not mean to associate white with Palestinians due to the order of my writing and dark with Jews or vice-versa.  What I do wish to convey is two opposites that will never come together until they have a really strong coffee element added to the mix. I like my drink hot and, if I may extend the association to that part of the middle east, is also really hot with conflict.

That donkey painted with black stripes can be seen symbolically in many ways.  For me it should be symbolic of Palestine and Israel’s conflict.  I see two opposite colors artificially painted stripes side by side, touching but not running together to form an overall  gray animal.  The donkey stands for the region full of politicians that exemplify, in their actions and dogmatic rhetoric, the alternative word for a male donkey, jackass.

I love the Adobe suite of products for the web.  It costs a lot of money but Dreamweaver and Photoshop really are most professional and one saves money, sometimes, by buying more than one software in a bundle.  I even have accepted Bridge even though it seems a bit awkward.  My infatuation was put to the test with the most recent upgrade, CS4.  The installation went swell until I noticed that Dreamweaver failed to install.  Of all the products in the suite, Dreamweaver is the most important for me.   No error message appeared, when I installed, except that that choice of application installation was dimmed at the start of the installation process.  Until this inexcusable error is corrected, I can not recommend this product.  It appears to me that the product installation is allegedly incompetently written.

Follow up 8/30/09

I found that Adobe Acrobat 9 Professional, a part of the CS4 suite failed.  I found the following web site where a whole list of issues were “exposed”: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405970.html.  I printed out the instructions and it came to 13 pages!  If Adobe could do things right, we would not be killing as many trees.

Ok, here we go.  Following instruction number one, I am to find the Adobe Licensing Repair Tool.  Here is the link: http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/licensing.html   I printed this page out which now makes my “kill tree” total to 14 pages.  I see a link at the bottom of the page which sends me to this web page: http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/licensing_download_eula.html  They want me to read a license agreement.  At the bottom of that page are separate links to Windows and Mac repair tools to download.  I am now on my umpteen cup of tea plowing through this never ending problem.  The “repair” software download went rather quick.  I now have a new file on my computer desktop called LIcenseRecovery11.5.0.9.  It opens up and a number of folders appear along with an application called “LicenseRecoveryLauncher.app”.  Well, it takes its sweet time “Finding software” on my laptop.  Next I see the screen show downloading Rosetta…  Then I see Installing 1 item.  The program quits.  Guess I need to go back to the cheat sheet to see what I need to do next.  The cheat sheet tells me to “Enter your administrator username and password when prompted and click OK.”  Excuse me but no application loaded for me to do this.  Now I have to find where that little pesky progam went during the installation.  Well it was not found on the desktop.  It was not found in Applications.  I give up.  I start the process over again by clicking on the file “LicenseRecoveryLauncer.app.  Whow, Terminal pops up

The instructions on the cheat sheet tells me to “Enter your administrator username and password when prompted and click OK.”   That is a bit wierd.  The program asks for Password first.  I try this first and it takes the second time.  I then get this screen:

Free Birthday Drinks At Starbucks?

Free Birthday Drinks At Starbucks?

07/24/2009 Score Card Comments 0 Comment

I had early the same morning purchased my sleeping zebra for myself and a grande mocha Frappuccino  for my son at Albertsons Super Market, 2500 E. Imperial Highway in Brea, California.  Later the same day I took my daughter over to the same Starbucks inside the same Albertsons to get my daughter a mocha Frappuccino.  My daughter told the barista that it was my birthday.  The barista reminded us that I could get a free drink because it was my birthday.  I already had my drink for the day so declined.  Next day I went with both my daughter and son to get our morning Starbucks at the same old Albertsons.  I asked if I could get my free birthday drink but was declined as the manager would have to approve.  The manager only works in the mornings.  Later in the day I drove over to a nearby Albertsons at 1930 N. Placentia Ave, Fullerton, and tried to get a free Starbucks drink but I was told that they are not a REAL Starbucks and would not provide a free birthday drink.  Real close to my house is a drive through Starbucks, a REAL Starbucks.  I walked in and asked if I qualify for a free drink because it was my birthday.  The person behind the cash register said yes!  I went on to say that yesterday was my birthday.  The answer was still yes!  I then said that my normal drink was a Zebra.  The answer was yes!  I was told that I could have any drink, any size!  I was impressed.  I did receive the drink, exactly as I specified and you know what?  They never asked to see proof of my birthday.

Everyone working at the Starbucks inside Albertsons know that I have a gold card from Starbucks.  That card guarantees you get a free drink on your birthday.  Evidently that card is not fully honored at all Albertsons.  The person at the REAL Starbucks did not ask to see that card but took my word, quite impressed!

I think everyone might have a different view of the importance of birthdays.  It is my view that it celebrates that person joining us in this absurd life experience.  It is comforting to share life with friends.  It would simply be awful to be alone.  Celebrations should say, “we are happy you are here with us”.   Businesses capitalize on birthdays to drum up business.  Birthdays are typically done in family and friend groups, all the more reason to use this vehicle.  Eating and drinking establishments get old customers to return and maybe entice new people with birthday rewards.  It is our opinion that managers should think of birthday give outs as not a cash loss, but rather a draw for customers to share their lives with this establishment.

Side note:  Corporate allegedly has told its stores that it is most important to get the customer their drink within two minutes.   It is our perception that some drinks are better prepared at Albertsons because they typically have less pressure to complete drink orders fast.  If I were to order a simple coffee or non mixed drink, I would go to either store.  Because my drink requires the mixing of two types of chocolate, I almost always get a better tasting drink at Albertsons.  The REAL Starbucks, allegedly, cut corners to get orders competed on time.

I still like the Albertsons on Imperial Highway.  I think I will start to spend more time going to the REAL Starbucks on the corner of Imperial Highway and Valencia in Brea.

Here a few impressions of our Maui trip:

As we drove from the airport to our resort on the  west end of the island, I was a bit shocked to see the land from highway 30 inward to be dry, almost desert looking while the resorts, hotels, residential and commercial properties that typically occupied the space between the highway and the sea were green, even lush in composition at times.

You can feel rain droplets coming down upon you but when you look up to find the offending cloud, only small white innocent puffs of white might appear.  We surmise that the rather strong trade winds carry the rain drops from long distances.  This was not a fluke occurrence but quite common.  I just loved this effect except tying to keep my digital still camera dry.

ABC Stores are all over the island.  We found this a terrific place to buy food and clothing items.  I found shirts and hats at very good prices.  http://www.abcstores.com/about.htm

The Safeway in Lahaina is a very good place to buy food and drink.  We took our dinner back to out room one night.

The airport at Maui is really nice.   It seems to be well planned layout, has a quiet interior and comfortable ambiance.  Problem is, the maintenance is falling behind.  We could not understand any of the voice announcements made over the public address.  Some items were marked as being broken, like a belt walkway.  The island is short of water but the faucets in the rest rooms would run way past the time anyone needed the water.

The opportunities for photo images is most impressive in two ways.  For any given measured amount of space on the island, you get many more chances to take interesting shots.  Time is also a factor.  One can stand in one small space on the island and over a short period of time the chances to take a shot that did NOT exist before presents itself.   Nature always seems to be changing on this island, especially the clouds.  Yellowstone comes close to beating out Maui for the number of opportunities for a given space and in some instances time.   My point is this, if photography is one of your hobbies, you must bring a good camera to this island.

Our daughter picked the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa for our stay using the AAA guide for Hawaii.   She did good.  This place is not cheap.   The AAA guide showed four diamonds.  My wife found a good package using Expedia.  We recommend this resort for a whole list of reasons.

The AAA guide, was most useless on for our stay once on the island.? We recommend the guide for picking out the places to say.  I would rip out the pages for restaurants to save size and weight.  The book that was most helpful was Maui Revealed by Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman, a Wizard Publication.

The AAA map we picked up prior to the trip, we seldom used.   The map we always used, we were given by the resort concierge called Maui Driving Map.   I think the proper web site is here for the Internet version: http://www.mauidrivingmaps.com/
This map is so well laid out, tells you so much, it rocks!

If you want a discounted price for the Road to Hana CD, call or stop by Boss Frogs Dive and Surf.  They have a couple of stores on the west side of the island.  I got my CD for $10.67.  This is also a good place to rent snorkeling gear, beach chairs, and umbrellas.  They offer 3 grades of masks and breathing.  We paid $31.20 for the top grade and weeks use.  Beach chair rate for a week was $10.42.  A float belt cost $15.62 for one week.   Note that these prices are only for reference and can change.   http://www.bossfrog.com/

The concierge at our resort made this restaurant one of their top recommendations.? As soon as I spotted ?Seafood Cioppino? in the concierge menu book, I knew I wanted to steer? our family to this place.? A few days later, my daughter wanted a burger.? I had noted that Kimo?s dinner started some time after 5pm and we needed to get my daughter fed much earlier.? We arrived and found that I could NOT order the Cippiono until later, a big disappointment.? There was a happy hour with drinks and a few menu items heavily discounted.? My daughter ordered her cheese burger for $9.95.? My wife had happy hour calamari for $3.50.? I had happy hour Mu Shu Pork for $4.50.? Happy hour margarita cost $3.50.? The well drinks cost $5.25 each.? I never got back to this restaurant to try their Cioppino which was a disappointment.? My memories of this restaurant was the total cost.? For three of us, the meal cost $53.02 for food and 5 bar drinks which included 2 virgin pina coladas for my daughter and Hula Pie.? Many of the restaurants offer a simply scrumptious concoction of ice cream pie.? The top is typically chocolate layer, filling is vanilla ice cream and the bottom crust is similar to Oreo cookie crust.? The description for Kimo?s Hula pie is as follows.? ?Hula Pie is made with macadamia nut ice cream piled high with chocolate cookie crust and toped with chocolate fudge, whipped cream and more macadamia nuts?.

We dinned at wood tables near the bar.? The bar and deck dinning was on a wood deck right on the water within the city of Lahaina.? The view from quite a few tables was impressive of the ocean.

Tip: Keep your receipt after dinning at this restaurant.? Look at the bottom of your receipt. ? It should say ?Bring this receipt in on your next visit & receive a FREE HULA PIE SLICE with the purchase of two lunch or dinner entries (1 per receipt)?.? The cost of a slice of this pie is $6.95.

We parked a few blocks away but had to pay for parking.

Tip: Some street parking is free for 3 hours.? Pay attention to your watch as they can tow your car if it sits beyond the 3 hours.

We did NOT partake of the official dinner so our review is a bit flawed. ?We definitely would go back.

Charley’s Restaurant, Pala, Maui, Hawaii

142 Hana Highway
Pala, Hawaii, 96779
808-579-9453

Date reviewed: 6/22/09 for breakfast.

Observations

  • Ambiance: funky
  • Seems every seat has a cushion and one does not have to sit on hard wood.
  • Coffee: ok, nothing special.
  • Tea?s hot water comes in nice tea pot.
  • Pancakes are so large you might not see the plate they come on.

Tip: Buy ONE pancake unless you are famished.

Tip: The blueberry pancakes come with a LOT of blueberries.  Eat this pancake center out as most of the blueberries are in the center of the pancakes.

Willie Nelson liked to eat at this establishment.

We found this restaurant quite acceptable and we recommend it.
