All I wanted to do was to get information on when and where there were power outages.  I went to this web page, https://www.sce.com/wildfire/psps-alerts.  I tried to sign up for text messages.  On that page I chose the option “Text Alerts”.  I mouse clicked on the number “28954” and a text message window appeared on my computer desk top.  I entered the word “ENROLL” into that text message box and got an error.

Our family loves the Apple Farm Inn located in San Luis Obispo, California.  We have been coming here for years.

Note: this review is for the hotel and not the motor inn.  We have never stayed at the Apple Farm Trellis Court portion of this property.  We were told that rooms are half the size and only one bed.  They do cost less than the inn.   You are next to the Apple Farm Restaurant.

This image above shows the Trellis Court portion of the Apple Farm property. Note that the rooms in the court access directly too and from the parking lot. The inn portion of the facility has much larger rooms requiring entry to the main building and each room is off a hallway.
Apple Tree Inn
The Apple Tree Inn is the hotel which we review in this post. The inn sits behind the gift shop and restaurant. You need to drive into the parking lot beside the gift shop to view the inn shown in the image above.

What we like about the Apple Farm Inn:

  • Its location is very good.  It is right off the 101 highway.  You can walk about 20 minutes down Monterrey Street to get to the downtown. There is also a trolley that costs 50 cents one way and stops right in front of this hotel.  There are other restaurants that are not too far away you can walk too.  Caution:  When coming up from the south on the 101 make sure you take the correct off ramp, Monterrey.  We failed once to do this once and because this hotel is at the north extreme of town and where the 101 enters a canyon, there were no roads to turn around for quite a few miles.
  • Rooms are really cute, spacious, clean, comfortable, quiet and not too expensive.  The room air conditioner is very good.  You can set a temperature for the room and we have not found any past AC units to be noisy.  The windows can also be opened for fresh air.  Every room has a gas fireplace which, by the way, does heat up the room.

  • Parking is convenient and easy to navigate.
  • There is a very good restaurant on the property.  The menu, service, and ambiance is good.  The food we had here was better than places we ate in town. We noticed that food dishes now have a way higher quality.  The cooks really are doing an excellent job.
  • There is also a gift shop that is quite large.
  • They also sell bakery items for sale.
  • You will get 2 very large chocolate chip cookies when you check in.
  • You get complimentary wine each night (one glass per person) from 3 pm to 7 pm.
  • Each room has two 10 fl oz of Martinelli’s Apple Juice.  Two 500 ml purified waters are provided.  Coffee for the coffee maker is also in the bathroom with the coffee maker.  We use the coffee maker to make tea.  Tea bags of various flavors are offered near the front desk along with small packets of honey.
  • A free local newspaper, the San Luis Obispo Tribune, is just outside your door each morning.
  • Look carefully in the basket holding the juice as you will find some chocolate kisses.
  • In the closet are two rather thick terry cloth bathrobe you can use during your stay.
  • Free WiFi.
  • There is a heated pool and hot tub.
  • Each night from 3:30 pm to 5 pm they feature a different local winery for a wine tasting.  They also offer some simple snacks along with the wine.
  • The hotel lobby rotates different drinks depending upon what part of the day it is.  Morning you can find coffee with cream and sugar.  Evening you may find tea and coffee.

What we do not like:

  • When we make tea in our room and use tap water we noticed large particle floaties.  This typically means the water is not that pure.  The Apple Farm provides two 500 ml free purified drinking water each day for each room.  We use that water and purified water we bring from home to make our tea.  It would be nice for San Luis Obispo to do a better job of filtering their water.

August 2016 update for one hotel room #100:  Room 100 Allegedly Flawed


July 7, 2017 update:  The Apple Farm offers a $5 dining credit with their Green Apple Program.  I do not recommend it.  We put the door knob placard out and found that nothing had been done to our room  We did not get apple juice, nor water, nor new towels, nor fresh sheets, etc.  The placard appears to tell room service not to enter to do anything!

Room 209 has a few minor flaws.  The commode does not properly flush.   The activation handle needs to be raised upward after pushing down to activate the flush.  If you fail to do this it never stops flushing, thus wasting lots of water.

The second mistake is the electrical wiring in the bathroom.  The light switch over the sink also turns on the vent over the shower and tub.  The second switch illuminates near the tub only.  The tub light should be married to the exhaust vent.

When I come to this hotel, many of the rooms have sink faucet handles that turn the wrong way, quite odd.

I did not enjoy the guest wine tasting reception held every night, July 7, 2017.  They moved this event to the Garden Room.  This is a much smaller space and lacks enough tables.  I like to bring my study materials such as books or laptop and writing materials and place them on a table to conduct work while drinking their free wine.  The Garden Room was way too small and lacked enough tables in their patio area.

My wife and I were taking a walking tour of downtown San Luis Obispo and decided it was time for lunch.  We had no idea of where to eat so we walked into an upscale clothing store and asked one of the sales ladies where a good place to eat for lunch.  She recommended Novo and told us where it was located.  We thanked her for her recommendation and once out of their shop I looked the restaurant up on my cell phone and the restaurant indeed had a very impressive consumers collective  score.

When we arrived at this place, we found two similar doors on either side of the front.  We could not figure out which door to use.  Both open into the bar.   Once inside you find yourself in a dark illuminated bar with some dining tables in front of the bar.

This is what you will see when you first enter the restaurant from the street. (There is a second entrance from the creek side). When we first arrived the front of the restaurant was quite dark, which is why I described the bar as being dark.

If you want to eat on the patio, take the long hallway back past the bar, the restrooms and kitchen until you come out of the building again on to their patio.  It was slightly interesting to find waiters and waitresses standing along both sides of the wall between the kitchen door and the back patio.

Once out of the main building, walk up to the hostess station in front of you and they will seat you.

As you end your walk down the long dark hallway to the patio, you come upon a raised deck where the host station is. Check in here to be seated. Note the chairs along both sides of this deck for people to sit and wait their turn to be seated.

What we liked:

  • This restaurant has a large back patio which we enjoyed.  They put up large umbrellas because the day was hot.  I noticed that they have rows of heaters along the creek.  One umbrella was slightly burned probably being placed too close to the heaters.
  • Service was good.
  • The salmon bisque was very good.  This one dish, for me is the reason to go here.  It was full of seafood and vegetables.
  • The sandwiches were good.

What we did not like:

  • The table napkins were too small and light.  I would really like to see much larger napkins with a heavier weight to them.

My son recommended we do a take out order from Dickey’s Barbecue Pit located near our home.  We ordered three Westerner sandwiches.  We got the sandwiches home and were disappointed.  I can make much better BBQ sandwiches so what is the point in buying from this place?  There was no barbecue sauce on the sandwich or as a side.  The raw onions in the sandwich were also a bit harsh, totally unexpected.  The onions should be grilled in my opinion.  I called the store (franchise) and was told that when the sandwiches are made in the store, they put barbecue sauce in the sandwich but do NOT include it in TO GO orders.  You have to know enough to ask for it.  I strongly suggested that they include it as a side, in a plastic container that most to go restaurants offer for optional items.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is not recommended for to go orders.

Not recommended for take out on Valentines Day.

Traffic:  I found traffic atrocious at about 5:15 on Valentine’s Day around this restaurant.  I used side streets to avoid traffic around Imperial Highway and Associated road.
Parking:  This shopping center had a lack of adequate parking near this restaurant.  I drove around and around trying to find a parking spot but could not.  I had to park illegally behind the restaurant parallel to where they dump their trash.
Service: The restaurant take out line was so long it reached the front door and it moved very, very, slowly.
Our pick up time was 5:30.  Our food was already prepared by the kitchen staff, bagged and the paid receipt was hung on the wall inside the take out closet just waiting for me to pick it up.  I did not reach the take out person until about 20 minutes after I arrived.
Our order was made using the Internet using Buca di Beppo web site so the items were preselected and paid for.  Quite a few people in the take out line did not pre-order but decided what to buy when they reached the take out booth.  The only menu was at this counter which was a big mistake.
A waitress came up to the people that were close to the take out window to see if they had pre-ordered or not.  I was able to get my food just before reaching the cashier but had to wait quite a long time to pay and get out of the place.  The person in front of me took his time deciding what to buy and the cashier typing in the order did so with a computer screen instead of a keyboard.  I could see her fingers slowly traversing the screen typing out the fellow’s order.
The food comes in very good aluminum containers.  You can not microwave using these containers so you must put the containers in an oven which requires more wait time or you can dish what you want on to a plate and then microwave.
We ordered a salad which came in a very large bowl and the salad dressing was adequate and in side containers.
The spaghetti marinara dish had very little tomato sauce, a telling deficiency.  My wife took some extra tomato sauce from the (wrong) chicken dish and poured it on to the spaghetti which helped a little.  I doused the dish with Parmesan cheese which helped.
The main meat dish should have been chicken Limone but we received chicken parmigiana instead.
They did get the desert correctly, large chocolate chip cannolis.

The pre-order process did ensure that our food was ready to be picked up but that is the only advantage.  I surmise that if we had table reservations, instead of take out, we could have had a much better and quicker meal.

The total bill for 4 people was $59.80.

Summary:  Take out for me is this.  You arrive, pay; they hand you your food and you leave in quick time.  Take out at this restaurant on Valentines Day for me was the opposite, a dreadful slow painful process.  I will never do this again.  I totally understand that the restaurant had no control over traffic and parking.  The lesson for me is to celebrate Valentines Day some other day when the automobiles and restaurant are more relaxed to perform better.  The restaurant made a large number of mistakes probably due to the speed at which they had to push out product and being swamped with customers all wanting attention.

  1. They should have had a person going down the take out line seeing if anyone had a pre-order.  That person could call using a FRS radio or go and get the completed order and holding a mobile credit card device complete the transaction.  They also could have had two people side by side dealing with take out.  Both those improvements would have sped up the line.  Even better yet, they should have directed all take out orders to a separate entrance next to the freeway.
  2. The kitchen staff could have shown more professionalism in their preparation and delivery.
  3. Almost every other take out establishment that I have used in the past, I find my food hot enough upon arriving home to sit down and eat right away but not with this meal.

The concierge for the Hilton San Diego Spa and Resort recommended the Bay Park Fish Company for an early dinner because we were in San Diego during Memorial Day weekend and restaurants and parking were getting slammed.  The concierge recommended this restaurant because it is visited more by local people and not by tourists.

My son does not like fish and my daughter is almost as limited in her choice of food.  Mom and dad love fish and, according to our children, other strange food items.  Mom and dad are often times challenged to find a restaurant that everyone in the family will accept.  The Bay Park Fish Company offers a wonderful broad choice of food choices for all ages of eaters.  As is often the problem with this type of restaurant, its breath of offerings tends to result in a lower score for most items.  I personally found my salmon fish plate to be nothing special.  The tartar sauce seemed to be mild.  My son ordered a cheeseburger but they forgot the cheese.  The waitress made the kitchen deliver the cheese to the table.  My wife ordered a calamari salad which she said was good.  She wanted a more spicy dressing.  My daughter had chicken tacos and they were good.  The waitress was fun and very good.

I do recommend this restaurant but I rate it as average.  If you find yourself in this city on a day where you think the restaurants will be slammed, I think you should consider this eatery.

If you dine here make sure you look overhead and see the numerous rod and reel combinations.
